BACKGROUND The Virginia Tech Transportation Insti- tute (VTTI) conducts research to save lives, time, and money and protect the environment. As one of seven premier research institutes created by Virginia Tech to answer national challenges, VTTI is continually advancing trans- portation through innovation and has impacted public policy on national and international levels. By most metrics, VTTI is the largest university-level transportation institute in the U.S. and houses the largest group of driving safety researchers in the world. The institute has more than 300 active projects across approximately 100 public- and private-sector sponsors, many of whom leverage the extensive experience of VTTI in the collection, reduction, and analyses of naturalistic driving data. The naturalistic driving study (NDS) method pioneered at VTTI involves instrumenting volunteers’ vehicles with an unobtrusive suite of cameras, sen- sors, and radars that continuously and automatically collect real-world driving behavior and performance. Today, VTTI houses nearly 90% of continuous naturalistic driving data in the world and is committed to working with its spon- sors on additional NDSs that capture user interactions with advanced-vehicle systems. NDS data allow researchers, govern- ment agencies, auto manufacturers, and suppliers to determine the greatest risks faced by the transportation community, with the goal of developing effective countermeasures.
