Choral
CD available (C6255C). If you are familiar with Jay Al thouse choral compositions, you know they are easily learned by most choirs. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross , arr. Hal Hopson, GIA Publications, Inc. G-9798, 2019, SATB and piano. This is the familiar text by Isaac Watts found in No. 298 and No. 299 in The United Methodist Hymnal but set to the folk song Wayfaring Stranger , known by most. It can be sung any Sunday during Lent but is also appropriate if you have a Good Friday corporate worship experience with choir. Prepare a Room For Me , arr. Rob Glover, GIA Publications, Inc. G-9805, 2019, SATB and organ with optional C Instrument (G-9805 INST), 3 octaves handbells (G9805HB), congregation (reproducible with online.net). Using the tune Southwell and Herman Stuempfle’s text telling the story of the Last Sup per, Glover has created a wonderful anthem for Holy Thursday starting with voices in unison, moving to two-part before ending with all four parts. Depend ing on the musical resources you have available, this anthem can be a simple song offered by your choir and organist or it can involve many with choral singing and various instrumental accompaniments. Easter and Ascension Tell Us Mary , Janet Sullivan Whitaker, World Library Publications, 007897, 2018, unison or children’s choir and keyboard, optional guitar, C instrument and congregation. If you are looking for an easy unison Easter anthem, consider this one. If you have a children’s choir and are looking for an easy anthem to combine your adult choir with your children’s choir, this is your piece. The guitar part and the C instrument part are included in the anthem and permission is granted to duplicate the congregation part when the choral version is purchased. Both the guitar part and the C instrument part are easily played by beginning instru
mentalists. The text tells the familiar Easter story of Mary Magdalene and the empty tomb.
The Strife Is O’er , arr. Robert J. Powell, Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers, Inc.) MSM-60-4019, 2020, SATB and organ with con gregation (free download if choral parts are purchased), optional brass quartet or quintet (two trumpets, horn or trombone and two trom
bones with optional tuba) and timpani MSM-60 4019B). This is a concertato arrangement of No. 306 in The United Methodist Hymnal . Verse one is for con gregation and unison choir except for the four-part Alleluia; verse two is congregation and four-part choir, verse three is four-part choir only, and verse four has the congregation and choir in unison with an optional soprano descant. This is a very festive addition to your choral library. All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name , Michael Burkhardt, Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers, Inc.) MSM-60-4040, 2020, SATB and organ with congregation (free down load if choral parts are purchased), optional brass quin tet (two trumpets, horn or trombone and two trom bones and tuba) and timpani (MSM-60-4040B). Like the text in No. 154 and No. 155 in The United Methodist Hymnal , the anthem is also in concertato form and involves both the Coronation and the Dia dem tunes. Verse one has the choir in unison with the congregation, verse two is four-part choir only, verse three has four-part choir with congregation, verse four has four-part choir only, and verse five (verse six in the hymnal) has choir in unison with congregation and an optional soprano descant. You will probably not want to add both of these concertatos to your library now since the arrangements are similar. – Robert Anderson
