No longer were traditional hymns the only source of inspiration and entertainment.

New young performers had a new sound, and Scripture songs emerged.

There was a renewed interest in youth ministry and share groups. You may recognize Jenny Carriker standing on the left.

During this decade, not that far away, at Princeton ’ s First Baptist Church, a group of young people, who loved the Lord and loved the new styles of music, performed in “ The Sounds of Conviction. ” With a membership of up to 120, they even performed and toured internationally. Our own Julie Hurley was one of several Westminster teenagers who performed with this group.

Music is such a joyful part of worship at Westminster. From the very beginning of my time here in 1982 to the present I praise, glorify and honor the Triune God with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs as part of the congregation and individually. God has drawn me ever closer to himself through the years as I worship him with song in church, at home, in the car and wherever I find myself.

“ Evangelism Explosion, ” a program started by D. James Kennedy, was a new way of sharing one ’ s faith. Our own Bud Coppinger, Charlie Cauthen, and Buddy Parker, and others went to Coral Ridge, Florida for this exciting new approach to sharing your faith. As you may know, with this method, Christians go out to share their faith individually with others. You knock on doors, and hope to be invited in. The story is remembered that two of these fellows were knocking on doors, but not being invited in, so one night, they ended up in a local laundromat. A conversation

started, and it happened to be with someone that one of “ our guys ” had worked with before. And our guy stated, “ I want you to know that there has been a real change in my life, ” and the customer at the laundromat who was listening replied, “ Well, if anybody ever needed it, it was you. ”
