Westminster Presbyterian Church Centennial Book

When consultants advised the church planning committees, one observation they offered was to obtain adjacent real estate when it is available for enhanced growth and ministry. In 1991, the church purchased the large historic home on Albemarle next to the parking lot. Long - time church member, Helen Hurd Canada, had worked at the downtown Flat Top National Bank in the customer service department for 32 years. Early on at the bank, she had asked for advice related

to savings and investments. She was given wise counsel. During her lifetime, she lived so sparingly that those who knew her expressed concern for her financial resources. It was with much surprise and gratitude that the members of Westminster learned that she had made the church her sole heir, leaving a sum of $275,000. From that amount, the pipe organ was renovated, and the newly - purchased “ Canada House ” would be a place for meetings and fellowship, and eventually serve as the home for the pastor and his family.

Knowing that people are praying for us and we are loved has provided a model that will guide us the rest of our lives. I pray that my sons and their families will find churches like Westminster where they may continue to serve and grow.

Twenty five years ago, we looked around and were confronted with the reality that our wonderful 75 year old building was showing some significant signs of aging, and serious consideration was given to repair and renovation.

December of 2015, Steve had his first of several surgeries, as we began our battle with brain cancer. Our church family rallied around us and carried us through the next six years, caring for us and loving us like family, through both the good and the tough times. God was truly honored by those acts of kindness.

Many of you will remember. For months, every square inch of this building got needed attention, as offices for church staff constantly changed, as places of worship changed. Asbestos removal became a huge part of the renovation. Every ceramic wall tile and every floor tile was replaced. Every square inch of plaster and sheetrock was painted. Rooms were moved around. For instance, do you remember what used to be in the men ’ s restroom area

by Jonathan ’ s office? That was the church secretary ’ s office. Do you remember what used to be in the office complex? That was the choir room. Do you remember what used to be where the elevator is now? That was the associate pastor ’ s study on one side and the men ’ s restroom near the Fellowship Hall entrance.
