2020 Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT 2020

Painting a Brighter Future....

Dear Friends,

Looking back over a year that included some major ups and downs, it has been so encouraging to see something that was unwavering – your support of our mission. Since the day I started at Warm Hearth Village I have been amazed and inspired by Dr. Kroontje’s vision and the way it has been honored. It’s easy to see that you believe in this vision as well. In a year that brought about major challenges, you responded more generously than ever! Instead of holding back, you stepped up. Instead of waiting to see the need, you asked what you could do. For this response and support, I am forever grateful for you. While 2020 was a different year, it did teach us that we are more resilient, determined and capable than we ever thought. With this spirit in mind, we look to 2021 to be our best year yet. My hope is that this booklet will help you see how your giving brings life to Warm Hearth and inspire some of you to give in new ways or for the first time. Whether it’s monetary donations or volunteering, we welcome and cherish your partnership.

We thank you for your generosity and look forward to an exciting year!

Neighbors In Need

Strategic Growth & Campus Revitalization

More than one-third of the nearly 600 residents who live at Warm Hearth Village are seniors on low, fixed- incomes. We struggle to keep pace with the growing needs and rely on our donors and the community for help. Our Neighbors in Need fund helps us fill in the gaps for these seniors and fulfill immediate needs such as food, shelter, health care, personal care supplies, pet supplies and emergency assistance.

Warm Hearth Village is an innovative provider of senior services in our region. As a nonprofit organization, we are continually challenged to provide superior quality care and services while making programs affordable to our residents. We seek and use donated funds for land acquisition, new construction, transportation resources, endowed Human Services positions and specialty programming designed to meet the unique needs of people over 55.

Employee Growth & Development

Warm Hearth Village has grown immensely over the last 47 years and now employs more than 300 people in careers that range from nurses to groundskeepers and everything in between, in both residential and home care settings. Our employees are the cornerstone of our organization and one of our most valuable resources. We raise funds to support employees through scholarships, training and education, professional development and employee appreciation initiatives.

Our endowed fund was established by residents as a way to build a safety net for seniors in need or those who spend down their resources well into the future. The fund was started with a $5,000 gift more than 20 years ago and now stands at over $2 million. The Foundation strives to grow this fund to provide sound financial footing for the organization and so that earnings from it can be used to support seniors for many generations to come.

CARING FOR OUR RESIDENTS

Residents are at the heart of the Foundation’s work and Warm Hearth’s mission. To ensure the richness of an inclusive and diverse environment, we address the needs of seniors who are financially less fortunate but contribute much to our Community. The Foundation works to provide the basics like food and shelter and the more complex needs associated with health care. Donations and collaborations through our Neighbors In Need programs provide this important support.

Special thanks to our sponsors, who gave $6,450 in 2020 in support of Neighbors in Need:

Cheeseburger In Parrot-dise Much of our day-to-day work and many of our programs looked quite different in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the same was true for our annual fundraiser event, Cheeseburger in Parrot-dise. Early in the year, there were a lot of unknowns related to the pandemic, in particular how long it would last, when things would be “normal” again and what activities were safe. As the months progressed, it became clear that we would not be able to gather with our residents, friends and community members for the event this year. Although it was a disappointing decision, we knew it was the right one to do our part in keeping everyone safe and healthy. Despite the cancellation, we still had 11 event sponsors, who had signed on to support the event early and expressed their desire to fulfill their commitment of support to benefit our Neighbors in Need fund even with no event taking place. We couldn’t be more grateful to these sponsors who stuck by us in a difficult time for us all.

Making the Holidays Brighter

Our newest program, started in December 2019, offers the opportunity for individuals, community groups and businesses to adopt a senior in need during the holidays. Silver Santas are given a wish list from their senior which includes their choice of food, personal care items or pet supplies as well as a special item on their holiday wish list. Warm Hearth Village staff members delivered the holiday cheer to 60 seniors in our Trolinger and New River House apartments and Showalter Center.

We look forward to smiles each year through the generosity of our Silver Santas in what will now be a regular annual program.

Silver Santas shared how much fun they had shopping for their seniors. It made their holiday brighter knowing they were making an impact in the life of a resident in need at Warm Hearth Village. One resident shared that she had been having a tough time getting in the Christmas spirit and had not been looking forward to the holidays until her gift was delivered. She said the delivery made her day and helped her find the holiday spirit she was missing.

Micah’s Program Each year our programs continue to grow to meet the needs of our neighbors thanks to the support of both individuals and community partners. This year was no exception in spite of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Micah’s Program saw a tremendous increase in support from existing partners including Feeding Southwest Virginia, St. Michael Lutheran Church, the NRV Glean Team and the United Way of the New River Valley as well as new partnerships including the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, Millstone Kitchen, HazelBea Catering and Christiansburg Presbyterian Church.

In total we were able to provide more than $134,000 in basic necessities to seniors in need on our campus. These basic necessities included shelf-stable groceries, fresh produce, cleaning products and personal care items, as well as pet food and supplies.

The Micah’s Program is vital to those who receive assistance each month and continues to have a positive impact on our campus each day.

Micah’s Pantry - providing nutrition assistance throughout the year. This pro- gram began in 2012 through a partnership with St. Michael Lutheran Church called Micah’s Soup for Seniors designed to help combat food insecurity on our campus. Micah’s Soup for Seniors continues to serve 100+ households each month. Over the past eight years, this program has grown to include an ad- ditional monthly food delivery as well as weekly deliveries of shelf-stable gro- ceries, bread, milk, cheese, eggs and meat. In addition, we maintain a stocked pantry that is available to residents on an as-needed basis. Micah’s Garden - providing fresh produce and promoting more nutritional di- etary options throughout the year in partnership with the NRV Glean Team. Micah’s Personal Care Items - providing access to items such as soap, laundry detergent, deodorant, toilet paper, incontinence products and more. Micah’s Meals – providing prepared meals to residents weekly in partnership with Millstone Kitchen, HazelBea Catering and Christiansburg Presbyterian Church. Micah’s Pets - helping residents and pets stay united by providing access to dog and cat food and kitty litter. Through this program, resident pet owners enjoy numerous proven health benefits in addition to promoting exercise and socialization.

CARING FOR OUR EMPLOYEES

Employees are a critical part of the Warm Hearth community. The Foundation supports employees through its Employee Growth and Development Fund and in 2020, played a large role in supporting those impacted by COVID-19. We would not be able to carry out our mission without the dedciation of our employees.

COVID-19 Focused Efforts 2020 was a year filled with unexpected challenges and hurdles for people across the globe. It was no different at Warm Hearth Village as we found ourselves striving more-so than ever before to protect our vulnerable resident population and look after not only the physical health but the emotional and financial well- being of our hard-working employees. Early in the year, as we began to understand the breadth of the pandemic and anticipate and plan for its effects on our Village, the Warm Hearth Foundation established two funds in direct response.

We knew our community of donors and supporters were generous, but they truly went above and beyond in what was a very difficult year to lend a hand and do their part. We could not be more grateful for the support we continue to receive.

$29,000

$11,228

The Employee Emergency Assistance Fund was created to assist employees who would need financial assistance as a direct result of COVID-19, whether it be falling ill themselves, caring for an immediate family member who was affected by the virus or experiencing a reduction in hours and wages. Our donors responded well beyond what we could have imagined donating over $29,000 to this fund through the course of the year.

The COVID-19 Relief Fund helped offset the long list of expenses that we could not have anticipated. The COVID-19 Relief Fund raised a total of $11,228 thanks to the generosity of individual donors and grantors and helped pay for vital materials and supplies, personal protective equipment and cleaning products.

Along with these funds, we received countless in-kind donations of items such as hand-sewn masks from residents and community members; meals for direct care staff from community partners like Jersey Mike’s and donations of essential, hard-to-find products like toilet paper and paper towels for seniors in need through our Micah’s Program.

INVESTING IN OUR HOME

Our campus is our home. The Strategic Growth and Campus Revitalization Fund is one way that we help residents and employees find meaning and fullfilment where they live and work. With these funds, we help create the places and amenities that bring rich experiences to everyday life.

Living and Learning Together Our mission, vision and values create unique opportunities which allow our residents and staff to work hand-in-hand to improve, innovate and achieve success alongside one another.

Thanks to the moxie and generous financial support of a special group of residents, we collaborated to raise funds for and construct an outdoor recreation court adjacent to Warm Hearth’s Village Center. Resident and Pickleball enthusiast Roland Byrd led the effort by making a substantial contribution toward the project and then encouraged others to do the same. Over $35,000 was raised for the construction of the court which was completed in the Fall of 2020. Current and future Warm Hearth Village residents can enjoy the court and use it to play Pickleball, tennis, basketball, badminton and more for years to come. $35,000

“Gloria really enjoyed therapy and had a great relationship with many of the therapy staff. It was a wonderful gift to receive.”

When Kroontje Health Care Center (KHCC) needed a therapy gym, a donor stepped up to help us make our vision a reality. Several spaces in KHCC were renovated and rearranged to create a larger rehabilitation gym with new and better equipment including a mat table, activity cart for occupational therapy and a wall thera-band exercise unit. The former gym was renovated to create a home-like environment where residents can practice home transition skills.

PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE

As the needs of seniors continue to increase and evolve year after year, planning for the future is a consistent component of our overall fundraising efforts. The Warm Hearth Foundation is dedicated to ensuring we will be able to serve and provide for the needs of seniors for years to come through the Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment and the Wybe and Marietje Kroontje Heritage Society. The shared commitment and generosity of those who contribute toward helping us continue to grow in these areas is truly invaluable. Together we are building a secure foundation for the future.

Wybe & Marietje Krontje Heritage Society A Legacy to Remember

One of the special things about working for the Warm Hearth Foundation is hav- ing the opportunity to help donors achieve their philanthropic goals. Our con- versations often focus on the impact donors want to make on their community. Many of our supporters call Warm Hearth Village home, and as residents want to see the legacy of our founders Wybe and Marietje Kroontje continue while leav- ing their own mark on the community that has provided them with friendships, joy, and security through their later years. This year, the Warm Hearth Foundation said goodbye to several long-term do- nors that will long be remembered in our community for the impact they had on the lives of those around them thanks to their generous gifts of support through their estate planning.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Byrd , moved with her husband Roland to Warm Hearth Village in 2011. Jackie genuinely enjoyed her nine years as a resident until her passing in December 2019. She loved the natural beauty of the Warm Hearth Village campus and spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends in her townhome at Woodside Terrace. Jackie served as a leader on the Founders Forest Resident Council for four years and was a volunteer with the Warm Hearth Foundation’s Micah’s Program. As a volunteer, Jackie saw the needs of seniors on our campus and the impact of the Foundation programs serving those in need. As a result, Jackie’s focus as a donor was on helping neighbors in need on our campus. Her daughter Debbie shared that, “the Warm Hearth Foundation was at the top of her list of organizations for charitable giving, especially the Neighbors in Need fund.” Jackie’s generous bequest gift has made an impact on the lives of seniors in need on our campus in the form of basic necessities including food, personal care items and health care.

Gloria Kurze Cobb moved to Warm Hearth Village in 2011. She was a resident in Dogwood Circle and later the Kroontje Health Care Center. Gloria loved gardening and took pride in her flower beds and potted plants on her patio. She loved the beauty of the Village and the deer and cows that frequently visited outside her back window. Gloria was a faithful donor to the Warm Hearth Foundation for eight years. Gloria’s son Richard played a key role in the decision to make a gift to the Warm Hearth Foundation through her estate. Richard shared that Warm Hearth Village provided a wonderful home for his mother for eight years and when she required advanced assistance, he was impressed with how unique Warm Hearth was compared to other long term care providers. Gloria’s gift will impact residents at the Village through the therapy program at the Kroontje Health Care Center, the Neighbors in Need fund and long into the future through the Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment. Her support will provide scholarship opportunities for employees through the Employee Growth and Development Fund.

Each of these individuals has a special place in our hearts as members of the Wybe and Marietje Kroontje Heritage Society. Collectively, they contributed $510,829 to the Warm Hearth Foundation in 2020.

Jim and Mary Ellen Moore were supporters of the Warm Hearth Foundation for 27 years. The Moores were long-time residents of Blacksburg before moving to the Village in 2012, first to Showalter Center and then the Kroontje Health Care Center. Jim was instrumental in helping to establish Warm Hearth at Home in 2013, which provides in-home companions and caregiver services to help seniors maintain their current living arrangement or navigate the transition to a higher level of care when needed. Over the years, the Moores learned of the needs of seniors at Warm Hearth Village and saw firsthand the care that was pro- vided to residents without the means to finance their care at Showalter Center and the Kroontje Health Care Center. “They loved Warm Hearth and enjoyed the time they lived there,” said Barb Moore, the Moores’ daughter. “They appreciated the care they received and believed in the organization’s mis- sion.” Thanks to their generous estate gift to the Brian H . Smith Benevolence Endowment, they will help provide care for seniors in need long into the future at Warm Hearth Village. Mom and dad loved Warm Hearth and enjoyed the time they lived there. They appreciated the care they received, and believed in the organization’s mission. “ “

DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS

Words fall short in expressing our gratitude to our many donors, volunteers and community partners. The contributions of time, talents and resources by so many throughout the year make our programs possible. Together we are changing lives.

Warm Hearth Foundation supporters, Sharen Hillison and Hugh VanLandingham , regularly volunteer to deliver food boxes to residents in our apartments including James Light. Thank you to Capital Electric store manager Rhonda Primm and delivery driver Matt Amos for all their dedication to helping make the Micah’s Program possible.

Kassie Wright , a local Subway employee, used her stimulus check to purchase sandwiches for 153 seniors who live on low, fixed incomes in our Trolinger and New River House apartments. Subway owner Scott Hillyard and Melanie Morris worked with Kassie to provide the meals at cost.

Each month Capital Electric in Blacksburg provides a driver and box truck to pickup shelf stable groceries and produce for our

Our volunteers have always been appreciated and valued, but the past year has shone a light on the immeasurable and invaluable service they provide.

Director of Risk Management, Kevin Sands , receives a donation of KN95 masks from our friends at Corning Incorporated in Blacksburg. We are so thankful to all those who donated masks this past year to help keep our employees and residents safe.

Radford University nursing students collected personal care items for our Micah’s Program and volunteered to deliver food boxes for those in need as part of their annual service project. Virginia Tech students used their remaining meal points as the semester came to an end to purchase meals for residents in our apartments.

The Micah’s Program relies not only on donations but on the hard work of our volunteers. As the use of volunteers was restricted due to the pandemic, we saw an increase in financial and in-kind support from individual donors as well as our partners throughout the community. We were able to overcome the challenges presented by the loss of our volunteers and looked inward to our staff to fill their shoes.

A Special Gift Christiansburg Subway employee Kassie Wright knew she wanted to use her stimulus check for good when the funds were issued to citizens for the first time in April 2020. The single mother of three used her stimulus check to purchase 153 boxed lunches from the Subway restaurant where she works for seniors living in the Trolinger and New River House apartments at Warm Hearth Village. Kassie said her employers, local Subway franchise owners Melanie Morris and Scott Hillyard, had taken great care to look after their employees despite the negative impact COVID-19 was having on their business. By putting the money back into the Subway restaurant and donating meals to seniors who she suspected could use a pick-me-up after the first few tough months of the pandemic, she made the most out of the stimulus funds. When Morris and Hillyard learned what she was planning, they agreed to let her pur- chase the meals at cost to leave a little money for Kassie to spend on herself and her family. This special expression of caring and generosity was a big treat for residents, who had been self-isolating for the greater part of the previous two months. Kassie’s gift was one of the bright spots that truly helped us get through a difficult year.
