I am writing a fond (and sad) farewell to my colleague and friend, Delegate Wendy Gooditis. Delegate Gooditis has vigorously represented the 10th House of Delegates district for six years. Her service began with her extraordinary 51.90% of the vote victory in 2017 which turned the formerly red district blue. She fought hard to keep that seat for three terms. Del. Gooditis was proudly a part of the 2017 “Blue Tsunami” in the HOD. That tsunami helped bring expanded Medicaid healthcare Elect No Strangers! Thirty-four years ago (1989) in an attempt to write a haiku, I penned the words that became the title for our directory of candidates . Elect No Strangers! If possible, elect friends. If not, make friends of those elected. David Bailey Every year since 1990 David Bailey Associates has published “Elect No Strangers” to help interested Virginians become acquainted with candidates for the General Assembly. This directory includes candidates listed in the order in which they will appear on the ballot for the general election . This directory includes all candidates as of July 28, 2023 . However, prior to 60 days before the November 7th election, party nominees that withdraw may be replaced by new candidates . Note that asterisks (*) indicate incumbents . Official information regarding the November election is available from local registrars and from the Virginia Department of Elections website, www.elections .virginia .gov. All candidates were contacted via email and/or phone call . Thank you to everyone who confirmed their campaign information . When we did not get a response we provided information that was available from the Virginia Department of Elections . Another excellent source for campaign information is the Virginia Public Access Project, www.vpap .org . As we often say, this directory includes all of the ‘winners’ – all of those who will serve . Consequently, she was named a 2019 HosPAC Hero for her support. She was active in other healthcare issues as well — particularly the fight to prevent suicide. The heartbreaking loss of her brother during her first campaign pushed her to keep that effort in the spotlight. Long an animal welfare advocate, she was a reliable loud voice for animal welfare legislation. Since the House of Delegates Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources Committee frequently dealt with legislation concerning animal welfare, former Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn appointed her as the Vice Chair of that Committee for two years. Delegate Gooditis never forgot that the 10th district contained a large number of rural residents and that 20% of the population self identified as immigrants. She thoughtfully represented all who lived in that district, whether a voter or not, whether a Gooditis supporter or not. She successfully passed bills supporting the agricultural community: The Dairy Producer Margin Coverage Premium Assistance Program allowed dairy farmers who have a resource management plan or a nutrient management plan to be reimbursed by the VA Dept. of Agriculture for certain annual payment fees, the Virginia Agriculture Food Assistance Program, and the Local Food and Farming Infrastructure Grant Program. She improved the lives of domestic workers by including them in Virginia employee protection laws. She pushed the licensing of certified midwives and reduced the age at which a child in foster care can be involved in their own care plan from 14 to 12 years old. Wendy Gooditis made a difference by serving in the House of Delegates; I am honored to have been able to serve with her. Delegate Kory represents Part of Fairfax County. As a Delegate, Elizabeth was known as a leader in progressive causes, the labor movement, and the immigrant/New American community. Moreover, her leadership on issues such as collective bargaining rights and paid sick leave has helped shift the conversation for progressives in Virginia on what can be accomplished. While I know she will remain a committed advocate for underrepresented communities in the Commonwealth, I am very sorry we will be losing her good humor, fighting spirit, advocacy, and unique perspective in the General Assembly. Elizabeth has been a trailblazer in the House of Delegates, and I will miss her a great deal.
