PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

NARRATIVE

The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to provide inclusive facilities, in conjunction with schools and private organizations that present a variety of recreational amenities including passive and active programs for residents of all ages. FY 2026 ACCOMPLISHMENTS  Continued to offer a greater number of programs than last year.  Several facilities upgraded to include Aquatic Center flooring and lighting, new fitness equipment, and new ball field lights at Tom’s Creek.  Replaced playground equipment at four parks (Municipal, Westover, Primrose, and Shenandoah)  Constructed several miles of off-road trails on Brush Mountain properties in partnership with the New River Land Trust and Poverty Creeks Trails Coalition.  Offered over 200 summer camps for kids of all ages.  Expanded yearly programming to residents of all ages.  Improved Kipps Ballfields to include field laser leveling bleachers and trash can replacements as well as adding an additional batting cage.

FY 2027 OBJECTIVES  Design and construct the golf course maintenance building.  Develop a more comprehensive marketing plan for the department.  Complete a management plan for each park.

 Engage the community to identify the future location of the new Recreation Center.  Continue to work with the New River Land Trust and Poverty Creek Trails Coalition to build and maintain the off-roads trails on Brush Mountain Properties.  Replace playground equipment at several Town parks.  Engage the community for input for future athletic field investments in preparation for capital investments in the next two years.
