NARRATIVE
The Public Works Department is committed to providing high quality services to the public in a safe, timely, and professional manner. Our mission includes the use of progressive and innovative methods of enhancing and maintaining public facilities, infrastructure, and landscape. FY 2026 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Administered and supervised street resurfacing projects valued at $1.26 million, located at various locations around town. Administered and supervised parking lot resurfacing at Fire Station 2 and Toms Creek Park. Completed the construction of Phase III of Southpoint Park Parking Lot. Reconstructed and widened 8,800 linear feet of the Huckleberry Trail. Completed site work for the construction of Park Restrooms at Nellies Cave Park and Southpoint Park. Completed numerous stormwater repair and maintenance projects to include outlet protection reconstruction, pipe network replacement, and ditch line reconstruction. Completed phase I of the exterior millwork repair and repainting at the Alexander Black House. Completed the building envelop waterproofing and window glass replacement at the Blacksburg Motor Company. Completed replacement of the Aquatic Center primary HVAC and dehumidification system. Completed design for the Old Town Hall Renovation. Completed interior painting and cabinetry installation at the Thomas Conner House. Completed the design and construction drawings for the Fleet Maintenance Building renovation. Attained National Tree City USA status for the thirty-fifth (35th) year for the care and maintenance of Blacksburg’s Urban Tree Canopy. Began renovation of the Price House historic iris garden. Implemented the Draper Coloring Pages project with the Public Arts Committee. Added 26 additional hanging baskets on Main Street, bringing our total to 280 baskets. Developed job-specific occupational safety onboarding for all Public Works new hires. Performed snowplow simulator training utilizing VML safety grant funds. Researched and purchased new safety equipment related to manhole and confined space entry. FY 2027 OBJECTIVES Administer and supervise street resurfacing program. Administer and supervise resurfacing of sections of Huckleberry and Shenandoah Community Trails. Design and construct Church St. sidewalk infill project Design and construct storm water connection in preparation for the McBryde sidewalk project.
