The Bluestone Review Spring 2022

Mountain Laurel By Marland Campbell

She was an Appalachian Mountain Laurel with strong roots a determined spirit- the kind you find when hiking along the softened narrow path with twists and turns and unexpected hurdles of fallen limbs and rolling rocks. She was a Mountain Laurel, and Oh! She blossomed in the summer sun, preferred the shade of oaks, and dipped her feet in the cool spring water with a pink smile spreading across her ivory, delicate face. She was a Mountain Laurel, born in the Blue Ridge Mountains, she had the perseverance of a pin oak tree, no stranger to hardships or hard work.

She kept her family close, she kept her faith steadfast, and her beauty- was without compare
