President’s Paragraph Following of the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: August 30, 2021 Good morning and welcome to Oak Hill Academy’s 143 rd school year. I have one question for you, the students of OHA: “What do you want?” Do you want to be surrounded by adults who won’t let you settle for being less than you should be? I hope so, because that’s what happens here. Do you want to grow and reach new levels of success, academically, athletically, socially? I hope so, because that’s what happens here. Do you want to build a circle of friends and classmates and teammates you will know and love for the rest of your life? If so, that’s good, because that’s what happens here at Oak Hill Academy. I commend you all for choosing to come to Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, to live and go to school. With this choice, you have set yourselves apart from your peers all over the world—those who choose to settle for less, who may take the easier path. Here at Oak Hill Academy, we all know that hard work, dedication, and sacrifice are the keys to great success. Collectively, I challenge us all to rise to the occasion befitting this moment, starting right here, right now. You, students, you are the lifeblood of our school. Know that you are joining a legacy of alumni stretching for generations. This is my 23 rd year at Oak Hill Academy; and I am 58 years old; so I understand from your perspective that folks like Rev. Turnmire,

Coach Smith, me … and perhaps a few others in this room—we may present to you as antiques. But I want you to think about this fact: Oak Hill Academy was here for 85 years before I was even born. You should take comfort in such an awesome legacy, take pride in it. There is a reason OHA is so successful and has been so for so long. So, I encourage you—trust us … especially when you hit a bump in the road or encounter difficulty. No, we are not perfect, but come rough times or high water, we shall be right here walking alongside you. We believe in you and we believe in our school. Lastly, let us make no mistake: God is here with us each step of the way, calling upon me to reaffirm in word and deed that you, the students of Oak Hill Academy … you are Children of God, Loved by God, and Created in God’s Image. The historic academy bell sits atop the tower in this chapel. It chimes only three times per year. Once to honor alumni who have died; once for each of our graduates on graduation eve (May 13, 2022), and today, for Convocation, the official start of the school year. OHA Alumnus, Mr. Chris Hill (‘94) will toll the academy bell, signaling the start of Oak Hill Academy’s 143 rd year. Welcome!

Supporting OHA Oak Hill Academy has provided a quality education for generations. Although some things have changed since 1878, the importance of an Oak Hill Academy education remains timeless. Our alumni and friends know this well and often ask,

How can I help the Academy? Here are two ways you can make a significant difference right now: refer and review.

Refer Oak Hill Academy is seeking mission-appropriate students and is still enrolling for the 2021 2022 academic year. Personal referrals are one of the most effective forms of communicating the importance of attending Oak Hill Academy. We are asking our trusted Oak Hill Academy supporters, friends, and families to help us find young people in grades 8-12 who would benefit from enrollment at Oak Hill. Would you be willing to connect them with us by sharing their contact details or by sharing ours? Just complete a “request information” form on our website or email us at admission@oak hill.net to learn more. For each referral you provide, we promise to reach out to them personally to share the oppor tunity of enrollment. In addition, Oak Hill Academy will make a contribution to our Promise Scholarship Fund on your behalf. These funds will be made available for financial aid for eligible applicants, further maximizing the impact of your referral. Review If you believe in the mission of Oak Hill Academy, please consider sharing it with others by writing a review about your experience on one of the online school review websites such as Niche, Boarding School Review, or Private School Review.

www.niche.com www.boardingschoolreview.com www.privateschoolreview.com

Increasingly, new families tell us that their final enrollment decision was based on their reading of online reviews. Your personal promotion of OHA is a priceless gift.

Annual Fund 2021-2022 This year our goal for the Annual Fund is $275,000. The Annual Fund helps to finance, drive, and support the hard work that goes on at Oak Hill Academy and provides direct support to the school’s daily operations not covered by tuition. Your support of the Annual Fund at any level makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. We challenge you to challenge others to help us reach our goal. Watch for the upcoming OHA Annual Fund Appeal in the mail or contact Tim Henry in the Development Office, thenry@oak-hill.net or 276-579-2619.

A sincere thank you to those that helped us surpass our Annual Fund goal of $265,000 for 2020-2021!

One of the most important needs for Oak Hill Academy is in the area of endowment. The future of our mission to girls and boys can be assured only if endowment exists. Would you consider creating an endowment to provide ongoing support for the Academy? A gift of ten thousand dollars or more will establish a named endowment by the donor. The endowment could be used in whatever area the donor chooses. If you wish to establish an endowment at Oak Hill Academy, please contact the President’s Office or Mr. Henry, our Director of Development, at 276-579-2619. The President’s Office of Oak Hill Academy has made every effort to list all individuals, corporations, churches, and other organizations that were Oak Hill supporters from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. If your name has been omitted or listed incorrectly, please contact our office so that we may correct our records. Thank you for your support!

OHA and Jed Foundation Partnership To help us in these efforts, we are excited to announce a new partnership with the Jed Foundation, a non-profit that specializes in the mental health of teens/young adults (https://www.jedfoundation.org/). Their goal is to empower students to “grow into healthy, thriving adults” by focusing on emotional health, substance misuse and suicide prevention. After several years of experience working with college campuses,

By all accounts, teens and young adults today are experiencing increasing mental health challenges. Rates of anxiety and depression are growing, and the pandemic has only exacerbated these trends. Sadly, suicide is the second leading cause of death in this age group. Virtually all teens are dealing with mental health issues in some way, whether personally or through relationships with their friends and classmates who are directly affected. spiritual, social and intellectual health are all interrelated. We desire to help our students grow in each of these ways, so they are as equipped as possible when they move into the next phase of their lives. Because of that philosophy, and to ensure we are supporting our students in a holistic way, this school year we will focus much attention on the issue of adolescent mental health with an eye toward ensuring that our practices and approach to student health are informed and effective. Here at OHA we focus on the whole student and recognize that emotional, physical,

JED has more recently launched a high school program designed to help schools thoroughly evaluate their mental health support policies and practices. To date, this one-of-a-kind, data driven JED Boarding School Program has partnered with only 5 high schools nationally, and we are pleased to be among them. This fall (2021) we will collect data from staff and students, review it along with our JED partners to identify areas where we can enhance our mental health support, and use that information to map out a comprehensive wellness plan later this school year. We believe that in partnering with JED, the Academy will be better equipped to meet the emotional needs of this current generation of students.

Gold Team News 2021-2022 Season Outlook

Coach Smith expects the 2021-22 basketball season to be one of his finest at OHA. The Warriors have joined the NIBC (National Invitation Basketball Conference), which boasts membership of at least six other top ten nationally ranked teams. Along with conference games, our schedule has the Warriors traveling to Arizona, Florida, New Jersey, Indiana and Massachusetts to play one of our toughest schedules yet. Coming back to lead the way is junior point guard and Duke commit, Caleb Foster. Underclassmen also returning in form are Justin McBride, Xavier Brown and Tybo Bailey. Bolstering our squad is University of Kentucky signee Chris Livingston, LSU commit Devin Ree, University of Pittsburgh signee Judah Mintz, and ETSU signee Jeremy Gregory. Other new additions to the Warriors this season are senior center Christian Reeves, and guards Cordell Livingston and Jordan Marsh. The Warriors are working hard to be prepared for their season opener at home on October 29th, which is just around the corner. The competition of the NIBC, along with our national schedule, will push the Warriors to attain their full potential. They look forward to the challenge and hope to emerge as one of Oak Hill’s best. Fans will be welcome to historic Turner Gymnasium for home games this season. In compliance with state guidelines for Virginia schools, masks will be required for all attendees.

Have You Heard of the OHA Parents’ Association? The Oak Hill Academy Parents’ Association (PA) was established several years ago as a venue for OHA families to connect and to support the mission of the Academy. In fact, the Oak Hill Mission Statement itself conveys the school’s emphasis on relationship-building in its commitment to:

“…fostering relationships among students, families, and our school….”

Oak Hill Academy believes in equipping our students to thrive, and we want nothing less for their families. Because OHA is 100% boarding, we welcome our students to get involved with campus life; likewise, we encourage our families to participate in the life of the school.

Purpose The Oak Hill Academy Parents’ Association serves four main functions. • To enrich the students’ experience • To establish connections with the Academy and among families • To support the mission of the Academy • To represent the Academy to external constituents

Membership The Oak Hill Academy Parents’ Association includes the parents, guardians and grandparents of students currently enrolled at the Academy. The PA encourages maximum involvement and does not collect any dues. We are all partners in promoting the growth and well-being of the young people entrusted to our care, and our goal for the 2021-2022 school year is 100% participation.
