President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: August 27, 2018 G ood morning, my name is Dr. Michael Groves, President of Oak Hill Academy. Welcome to our school, located here in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the town with the name of all names, Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. I believe it is important for you to hear from me, the Head of School, what we believe … our values. We believe in community—for here in this place— even though we assemble from all over the word, here we live together—so, value this community, our community, your community. We believe in responsibility, for that is how a person grows into maturity, by taking responsibility for oneself. We believe in transformation, for if you do take responsibility for yourself and live in a community that holds you accountable, you can and will grow into the person you aspire to be. We believe in moral courage. To stand up for what is right, to protect those who may be weaker or less fortunate than you, to value what the world may take for granted … that takes moral courage. This year our theme is “Walk in Your Shoes.” We want you to learn that viewing life from another’s perspective is an invaluable lens to view your own life. Serving others, being compassionate and generous; I believe that a life lived selflessly is a life lived with tremendous character. To walk in another’s shoes is how you transform yourself into the person God intends for you to be. New students and returning students alike, you shall be pushed to new levels of success here on “The Hill.” So, remember, when you are uncomfortable, this indicates you are growing. Be patient. It is a long journey from today until May 18; real growth takes time; healthy relationships take time. Be patient. Know that there are fine folks here at OHA, people with a world of experience, or well-worn shoes if you will: Coach Steve Smith, 35 years, Rhonda Bowen 38 years, yours truly, over 20 years. We have walked this ground before and we shall be here for you.
Will we push you sometimes? Absolutely, expect nothing less. Will we be there for you, absolutely, we expect nothing less from ourselves—or from any person here on staff. This is a special school with many great traditions, none more special than the tolling of the Academy Bell. Seniors, remember this moment, for after today, the bell shall not toll again until May 17, 2019, graduation eve. Let us begin the 140th academic year with tolling of the Academy Bell.

Oak Hill Academy Welcom
On Monday morning, August 27th, the original school bell chimed as Oak Hill Academy officially began its 140th academic year. With this new beginning comes the anticipation of a successful year by students and faculty alike. This year our diverse group of students comes to us from 22 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 15 foreign countries. All have come together to create our unique community on “the hill” where we strive to provide a quality education for all who come our way. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of unpacking, finding room assignments, getting class schedules, and picking up supplies and uniforms a new sense of independence is discovered; new friendships are created; old friendships are rekindled; and another chapter in the history of the school is written. The entire Oak Hill Academy faculty and staff welcomes our students to campus and looks forward to another successful year. 140

In her free time Ms. Brown enjoys painting, fishing, baking, swimming (especially in the ocean), and loves to play tennis. She is excited about the team she gets to work with every day and appreciates the support from these co-workers whom she can call her friends. Mrs. Shaquera Clawson Mrs. Clawson is returning to Oak Hill Academy as the new Dean of Girls. She previously worked as a Resident Manager in Hough Dormitory during the 2011-2012 school year. During her time away from Oak Hill, she worked in Financial Services as a Personal Banker at Wells Fargo and Bank of America and has worked in Youth and Family ministry through the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA). Most recently, she served as the Assistant Director of Student Financial Aid at Appalachian State University. Mrs. Clawson received her Bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts and Religious Studies from Lees-McRae College. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Family Studies with a concentration in Christian Counseling from Amberton University. Mrs. Clawson is excited to be back on “The Hill” and have the chance to interact with the new and returning students. She is passionate about the mission of Oak Hill and committed to serving the population of students that attend the school. In her free time, Mrs. Clawson enjoys vacationing in tropical places, watching new films in the movie theatre, singing in the church choir, and spending time with her godson, Jude. She is married to Brandon and they have a French bulldog, Penny, who can be seen sporting her Oak Hill doggy gear around campus. Mrs. Gail Duranko Mrs. Duranko joins Oak Hill Academy as an administrative assistant in the Business Office. She also assists our nurses with student medical appointments. Mrs. Duranko received her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Penn State University, where she met her husband Gary. Mrs. Duranko and her husband have two children, Jill and Megan. They have two dogs, Bailey and Phoebe, who both love meeting the students. Mrs. Duranko loves animals and enjoys reading, listening to music, watching movies, RV’ing with her husband and dogs, and texting with her daughters. She is loving the South and life on “The Hill!”
New Faculty Members Mr. Griffin Fisher
Mr. Fisher joins Oak Hill Academy as a math and science teacher and IT assistant. Mr. Fisher grew up on the mountainous ranges of Tallulah Falls, Georgia, where he attended Tallulah Falls School as a day student. He received a bachelor’s degree in Entertainment Technology with a minor in Film & Digital Media from the University of North Alabama. Mr. Fisher interned at FAME Studios where he assisted and better learned the art of recording, mixing, and mastering music. Not long after, he made his way to South Korea where he worked as an ESL teacher at FasTracKids. His last two years in Korea, he managed the local branch of FTK as well as trained and corresponded with teachers from other FTKs around Korea. Deciding that it was time to return to the states, Mr. Fisher ended up in Mouth of Wilson where, not by coincidence, both of his parents work. He enjoys teaching two Physical Science courses along with an SAT Math class and Computer Programming. In his free time Mr. Fisher enjoys reading historical and non-fiction books, utilizing high technology, and going camping or hiking on the Appalachian Trail. She enjoys swimming in the beautiful waters of Hawaii, hiking, cooking, and floral design.
Ms. Cindy Kaufelt Retires
Ms. Cindy Kaufelt retired at the conclusion of the 2018 Summer Session following 27 years of service to Oak Hill Academy. During her tenure at the school Ms. Kaufelt, better known to the students as “Ms. K.,” served as a resident manager on the boys’ side of campus and as the Campus Store manager. Ms. Kaufelt made the Campus Store a welcome place for the students to gather each day. She knew every student by name. The students knew that Ms. K would try her best to make certain their favorite foods, drinks, and other essentials were available in the store. We extend a heartfelt “thank you” to Ms. K. for her invaluable service to OHA and wish her the best in her retirement!
In Memoriam Dr. Dennis Throckmorton Oak Hill Academy board member, Dr. Dennis Throckmorton, passed away suddenly on August 23, 2018. Dr. Throckmorton practiced dentistry in Wytheville, Virginia, for 38 years and was appointed to the OHA Board of Trustees in 2012.
We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Dennis Throckmorton.

Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 14-15 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. Everyone then gathered in Fletcher Chapel for a presentation by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. The students, faculty, and staff joined alumni for a brief memorial service to pay tribute to alumni who had passed during the previous year. The tolling of the campus bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. The group then made their way to Noonkester Park for a picnic lunch and afternoon of fun and visiting. Food stations, games, and music highlighted the afternoon festivities. A new addition to the Alumni Weekend schedule was “The Hill on a Midsummer’s Night Fundraising Dinner.” Tickets for the event were $100 per person or a table of six for $500. A delicious buffet dinner and live music were enjoyed on the lawn at the Hough Dormitory Picnic Shelter. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with a continental breakfast in the dining hall and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 13-14, 2019. Saturday morning began with registration and social time.
Alumni Weekend 2018
“Over the Hill Alumni” Gang The 2018 alumni work week was again a great time for all. The “Over the Hill” Gang made their way to campus for a week of work and fun. They completed their usual gardening tasks, refinished the President’s Home steps, and painted the steps leading to Hough Dormitory. A special thanks to all of the workers, Don Krauss, Sarah Ussery Sink, Mary and Otis Reamy, Jo Ann (Watkins) and Carroll Harvey, Jim Herchenrider and Havelenna, Ronnie Anderson, and Bonnie Lambert Cofield. Ted Ussery was also along but recuperating from knee surgery. We look forward to the return of the “Over the Hill Gang” again next summer!

Become Part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang A Great Way to Give Back to Your School! Attention alumni and former students – Are you willing to get a little dirty, sleep in a dorm room, eat in Vaughan Dining Hall, laugh a lot, and sweat a little? If so, give Dr. Groves or Tim Henry a call about becoming part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang. The 2019 work week will be July 8-12!
$1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to get as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. The President’s Welcome to OHA Picnic was held Saturday, September 1 at the pavilion in Noonkester Park. At this annual event, Oak Hill Academy President Dr. Michael Groves and his wife Joy welcome all OHA students and faculty for the start of a great school year.
Gold Team News 2018-2019 Season Outlook Tradition dictates that the Oak Hill Warriors play the most challenging high school basketball schedule in the nation. This year is no different. The Warriors will again meet many other top ranked teams. Coach Smith has never been the type to back away from tough competition. His motto has always been one of – if you want to be the best, then you need to play the best. This season the team will compete in two different events in the state of Florida (City of Palms Classic, December & National Hoopfest, February), as well as the Bojangles Bash in Columbia, SC in early December. Highlighted in the month of January is a nationally televised game on ESPN from the Hall of Fame HoopHall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a trip to California for the Nike Extravaganza. In addition to demanding road competitions, the Warriors will play 20+ home games along with numerous events in our region in Bristol & Lexington, Virginia, Beckley, West Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Oak Hill has been a fixture in high school basketball since winning their first national championship in 1993. This year’s squad will be much featured via social media and live streaming games. And OHA is happy to offer all of our home games streaming live on our new school site at www.ohaevents.com. Join the Warriors this year either at a home or road game, or by watching on line, as they suit up and lay it on the line each and every game in their quest to continue the winning tradition and success of Oak Hill Basketball.
