After obtaining an Associate's degree from Surry Community College, she attended Lees-McCrae College to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Arts in Elementary Education. She attended Appalachian State University and earned a Master’s Degree in Reading in 2005. She taught first grade at Copeland Elementary School for three years, first and third grade at Cedar Ridge Elementary School for ten years.
