Repeated use of alcohol can lead to dependence. Sudden cessation of alcohol intake is likely to producewithdrawal symptoms, including severe anxiety, tremors, hallucinations, and convulsions. Alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening. Long-term consumption of largequantities of alcohol, particularlywhen combinedwith poor nutrition, can also lead to permanent damage to vital organs such as the brain and liver. Mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy may give birth to infants with fetal alcohol syndrome.Theseinfantshaveirreversiblephysicalabnormalitiesandmentalretardation.In addition, research indicates that children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk than other youngsters of becoming alcoholics. Alcoholic Beverages - Possession, consumption, and/or distribution of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the Bluefield College campus. This includes areas of public access within the bounds of the Bluefield College campus or on the grounds of any properties leased or controlled byBluefield College. As well, these same are prohibited at locations of college- sponsoredactivitiesoreventssponsoredbyanycollegeorganization,departmentorgroupor by any individual in the name of an organization, department, or group. Underage drinking is expressly prohibited. Any student who returns to the campus while intoxicated shall be subject to fulldisciplinaryaction. Intoxication - A state of being causing a person to experience a loss of normal use of his/her mental and/or physical faculties. This includes, but is not limited to, slurred speech, loss of motorcoordination, aggression, lossofmemory, abusivebehavior or behaviorthat satisfies the criteria for intoxication byblood alcohol content. Illegal Drugs - Manufacturing, possessing, distributing, and/or using controlled substances including, but not limited to, amphetamines, barbiturates, hallucinogens, narcotics, marijuana, cocaine, crack, anabolic steroids or other intoxicants and/or drugparaphernalia. Students may be required to be drug tested at the student’s expense. Possession, consumption, and/or distribution of illegal or illegally obtained drugs are prohibited on the Bluefield College campus. This includes areas of public access within the bounds of the Bluefield College campus or on the grounds of any properties leased or controlled byBluefield College. As well, these same are prohibited at locations of college- sponsored activities or events sponsored by any college organization, department or group or byany individual in the name of an organization, department, or group. Any student who returns to the campus while under the influence of drugs or in possession of drugs shall be subject to fulldisciplinaryaction. Training and counseling resources - The College makes continuous efforts to keep students,faculty,andstaffawareoftheon-campusandoff-campusprogramswhichprovide information and professional services onmatters related to the abuse of alcohol and drugs. Students are encouraged to contact theOffice of Student Development for information and appropriate referral. Policy review - This policy statement and any revisions thereto shall be published annually to students and employees. Distribution shall be the responsibility of the Office of Student Development and the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Office of Student Development and the Steering Committee for an Alcohol and Drug-Free Campus shall BLUEFIELD COLLEGE SUBSTANCE POLICY
