Cabell’s Column Graduation Thoughts

With the increasing sophistication of Artificial Intelligence, there are some philosophers that now question whether Descartes is still right that logical thought is what separates humanity from everything else. I won’t pretend to know about that. But there is another sentence – this one with a religious provenance: “I love, therefore I am.” Especially at Graduation, this is the sentence that resonates for me. Our Puppy Raisers and Trainers fill our dogs with their love and pass them on into the lives of our partners. Our Donors and Supporters make selfless sacrifices to help other people that they do not even know. Our Volunteers give their time and attention to all aspects of Saint Francis, from puppy sitting, dog walking, and grooming to office work and grounds maintenance. To me, these are all acts of love. commitment to our mission and to everyone that gave in every way humanly possible to make Graduation a reality for the people that so deserve it. I am honored to be surrounded with people that define generosity in every way. I am no philosopher, but I know humanity when I see it. It’s right here. I am deeply grateful to our Puppy Raisers for their tremendous

T his issue is dedicated to Saint Francis Graduation. It is a joy to see the culmination of the hard work leading up to the Big Day. In these pages you will see the proud teams that are starting out on a life together that promises to be full of new opportunities, laughter, and moments of magic. Whenever I think of Graduation, it never takes long for my thoughts to stray to Puppy Raisers. There is a saying in the service dog world: “In every service dog beats the heart of a puppy raiser.” It’s true. Whether a volunteer taking a puppy into their home or an inmate that takes a puppy into their cell, all Puppy Raisers commit their time, their energy, and most importantly, their heart. Imagine. Their goal is to give up this special dog in service to someone else. Let that sink in. In 1637, Descartes wrote the famous words: “I think, therefore I am.” This simple sentence became the basis of much of Western philosophy.

Graduation!

A t Graduation, we celebrate partners and their Saint Francis Service Dogs. Saint Francis Service Dogs can change the lives of a person, a family, and a community for the better. Our dogs are trained to empower both children and adults who face a wide range of disabilities including autism, arthritis, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and more. Every day, Saint Francis Service Dogs make amazing differences in the lives of those they love. They can retrieve dropped items – everything from a sweater to a dime. They can open heavy doors. They often help with daily activities such as dressing or cooking. They can provide assistance when their partner is injured or in distress. For the dogs, it starts in early puppyhood and lasts for two years or more. For them, it means learning to be brave no matter what the environment, steady no matter how stressful things are, and prepared to work at a moment’s notice. the bond between our newest

For the people, it starts with a hope and ends up with a dream come true. For them, it means undergoing a rigorous application and screening process, preparing for meeting the financial, physical and emotional requirements of partnership with a Saint Francis Service Dog, interviews with potential dogs, team training, follow up training, regular reporting and testing. These partnerships could not happen without a lot of hard work and commitment from many people. Volunteers, inmates, breeders and donors all put their shoulder to the wheel in order to help us produce the kind, gentle, smart and healthy dogs that are capable of changing people’s lives. All of these people help us – and they do it quietly and without fanfare. After all the hard work is done, we watch the new teams leave together to go out into the world and tackle it head on. It is an amazing privilege. We are proud to announce the Saint Francis Graduating Class of 2019.

Profile of a Supporter: The ziMS Foundation, Virginia Beach, VA Tidewater Tails

R yan W. Zimmerman is a professional baseball player for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball. In 1995, Ryan’s mother, Cheryl was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a chronic and unpredictable disease that affects the central nervous system. In 2006, Ryan established the ziMS Foundation in his hometown of Virginia Beach, VA. The Foundation is dedicated to the treatment and ultimate cure of Multiple Sclerosis by funding comprehensive support and educational programs As President of the ziMS Foundation, Ryan is excited by the prospect of giving back to his community and finding a cure for this unpredictable disease. “My family has given me the support to fulfill my dreams. The Washington Nationals have given me the opportunity to play the game that I love at the highest level in our nation’s

capital. I am thrilled to have launched a foundation that I hope can make a real impact in the life of my family as well as many others afflicted by MS.” In the US, the number of people with MS is estimated to be about 400,000, with approximately 10,000 new cases diagnosed every year (that’s 200 new cases per week). The Foundation is dedicated to the treatment and ultimate cure of MS by funding comprehensive support and educational programs. She served as the Vice President of Development at Feeding America Southwest Virginia and most recently as the Director of Development at The Jefferson Center. She has extensive experience in all aspects of non-profit philanthropy, from development to integrated marketing and strategic planning. A Pup's Progress It’s a Little Chili in Here…

W ell, hello! I’m new around here…like, REALLY new! My brothers and sisters and I were just born in the middle of March and WOW…this is fun! Our momma is fuzzy and warm, the blankets are soft and clean, the human folks are so very gentle, and the milk bar is always open. At first, we slept and ate and slept and ate…lately, we have added crawling and squealing and wiggling and wagging to our day. They call us the Spice Litter; my name is Chili because I am a little firecracker! Our momma’s name is Darby. She is a Saint Francis Service Dog in training, and she is very smart. We are her first babies. Momma lives in Williamsburg with VERY nice people but when it was almost time for me and the other Spices to arrive, she came to Roanoke to stay with MORE nice people. They stayed up all night to help us be born and they made sure we were healthy and they made sure we got enough to eat and they made sure we were warm and they helped Momma take care of us (because five puppies take a lot of caring!). Now that we are a little bigger, we can play outside sometimes if the weather is nice, and we have toys to squeak and balls to roll and boxes to clamber over. Like most brothers and sisters, we sometimes squabble but we are all best friends. And even though we are VERY young…we are all hoping to grow up to be service dogs like our Momma. The games we play and the toys we share and the love we get are all helping us get to that dream (at least, that’s what the nice people say!). I hope that you will join us on our journey.
