Do you love to be outdoors in nature? Imagine yourself relaxing at your favorite place to be outside in Floyd. Is it on a high, green hill? Or sitting quietly under a canopy of trees along the river? Imagine the colors and shapes your eyes take in from this special place. What do you see? A brilliant blue sky, streaked with hazy clouds? Endlessly rolling hills, all velvety green and speckled with hay bales or grazing cattle? Or, maybe you've chosen a lush Appalachian forest, a cool and shaded slope from the midday sun. Now imagine what you hear. A light breeze rustling in boughs overhead, softly swishing through the long grass? Perhaps birds, chirping and singing to each other. The distant purr of a tractor, a chicken cackling, or water chuckling and tumbling over a rocky creek bed? What thoughts fill your heart as you take in these surroundings? Maybe words like peace, thankfulness, happiness, or wonder come to mind. What other words describe how you feel here in this special place? Write a few of them down. King David, the writer of Psalm 19, shares these feelings with you. He was so moved in his spirit by the amazing outdoors that surrounded him, that his feelings flowed out of his heart in the opening words of this beautiful poem. The Holy Spirit prompted him to write, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.” In his youth, as a shepherd who lived in the wild places of nature both day and night with his sheep, we can be certain that he spent many hours gazing up at the ever-changing clouds, savoring a fiery sunset, and staring with wonder into a sparkling night sky filled with stars! In nature, David recognized rightly what all this beauty means: There is Someone who made it all, and that Someone is pure and good, completely powerful, and utterly magnificent. That Someone is God. Who else could possibly create such a thing as our incredible planet and the infinite universe beyond? Only God, whose magnitude is beyond our comprehension. David's heart continues to flow out with praise and wonder at God’s wisdom and perfect laws. When your heart is stirred, you too can write down the thoughts that fill you. You can journal what things you hear and see in creation that move your heart to worship and wonder, or you can try creating a poem patterned after one of the Psalms. Take each line or phrase of the psalm, and reword it in your own language, using images and scenes from your home area of Floyd. God loves to hear how His creation and His presence stir his people to express their hearts in worship and adoration. It is a precious way to connect with Him. If you ask him, the Holy Spirit will give you the words to express all the wonder and worship that is stirring deep in your heart.
Psalm treats them both, and recommends them both to our diligent study. The book of the creatures, in which we may easily read the power and godhead of the Creator (verses 1-6). The book of the scriptures, which makes known to us the will of God concerning our duty. He shows the excellency and usefulness of that book (verses 7-11) and then teaches us how to improve it (verses 12-14). -Matthew Henry , Matthew Henry Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible
