Recent Notable Accomplishments Recognized Nationally

Blood test for head injuries, developed in Blacksburg, gains FDA approval VCOM researchers recently gained FDA approval for a blood test to diagnose concussions, which was previously thought to be impossible. The implications for improved healthcare are tremendous given that 3.8 million sports-related

concussions and as many as 9 million non-sports concussions occur annually. VCOM research finds genetic markers for lung cancer

www.vcom.edu

With nearly 250,000 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the United States every year, early detection is key in beating the deadly disease. A team of researchers at VCOM found a genetic explanation that is able to tell who is at risk for developing lung cancer. On it’s way to being commercialized, this test will save lives by alerting doctors to who needs additional screening and environmental changes. VCOM opens children’s clinic in Dominican Republic The Oscar de la Renta Pediatric Center built in the late Mr. de la Renta’s memory, opened in Punta Cana and is managed in partnership with VCOM. This sustainable source of care for the community serves 50-60 local children per day with most services offered free of charge. VCOM provides this service for the community and gives experience to students who serve at the clinic on global medical missions. VCOM researchers identify new breast cancer gene Researchers at VCOM identified a genetic link helping to explain why African American women are 43% more likely to develop and die from breast cancer than their Caucasian counterparts. This research will move forward to make a blood test that will alert women if they have pre-dispostion to the disease, helping to implement ways to find it earlier. VCOM President named 2018 AOF president Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, DO, President and Provost of VCOM was named the American Osteopathic Foundation’s (AOF) President for 2018. President Tooke-Rawlin’s commitment to medical education and osteopathic medicine in the face of an ever-changing landscape earned her this top honor.
