TOWN ATTORNEY

NARRATIVE

The Town Attorney provides legal counsel to Blacksburg Town Council and its appointees. Our goal is to advance the interests of the Town through its policies and ordinances, and to reduce potential risks through advance planning and collaboration with Town staff.

FY 2024-2025 ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Prepared policy and ordinance to establish the EMS Cost Recovery Program.

• Assisted the Planning Department with the development of the small lots zoning ordinance. • Managed and implemented a new software program to more efficiently manage all Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. • Prepared ordinance for the fire department to prevent overcrowding in buildings. • Tracked the 2024 General Assembly legislation. • Continued to collect delinquent taxes and accounts receivable. • Provided advice in a timely fashion to Council and staff on legal issues.

FY 2025-2026 OBJECTIVES • Professional development through LGA and LGPA conferences.

• Review the Town Code and Zoning Ordinance for opportunities for improvement. • Assist staff with policies and ordinances to carryout Town Council’s strategic goals.
