ENGINEERING AND GIS DEPARTMENT
NARRATIVE
The Engineering and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department enhances the community through the delivery of collaborative, innovative, and sound engineering and provision of geospatial information accurately and rapidly to support critical decision making. Engineering services are provided for monitoring, expansion and improvement of the transportation, drinking water, storm water, and sanitary sewer systems to assure reliability, demonstrate best practices and enhance environmental sensitivity. FY 2024-2025 ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Developed data standards and map application for active construction projects in collaboration with Community Relations Office for continued public and staff reference. • Continued work on NextGen 911 addressing and data quality control. • Published custom mobile application and mapping tools to enable Public Works to perform inspections for the Water Service Line Inventory required by new EPA Rules. • Aided Town Manager’s office and Planning staff with multiple 3D visualizations of the Downtown Northwest Commercial District to inform the proposed overlay district standards. • Completed construction of the South Main Streetscape project. • Finalized the design and easement acquisitions for and bid and started construction on the first phase of the Harding Avenue Drainage, Sidewalk, and Roadway Improvements project. • Bid and started construction of the Meadowbrook Greenway Trail and North Main Street Trail projects. • Started design of the Clay Street Sidewalk and Roadway Improvement project. • Bid the VDOT Revenue Sharing Eheart Street Cycle Track project. • Completed the programmatic design of, applied for funding through the VDOT Revenue Sharing program, selected a consultant and started detail design of the Draper Road Streetscape project. FY 2025-2026 OBJECTIVES • Continued maintenance and improvements to data detail and accuracy of NextGen911 GIS data. • Complete the Town Corporate Limits survey and incorporate into base data. • Continued enhancements and improvements to workflows using the new Land Development system. • Continued updates and enhancements to GIS Enterprise site to support staff efforts and public use. • Finalize construction of the Harding Avenue Drainage, Sidewalk, and Roadway Improvements; Meadowbrook Greenway Trail; and North Main Street Trail projects. • Complete construction of the Revenue Sharing Eheart Street Cycle Track Project. • Construct the Berry Court Trail connection to First & Main. • Design the Meadowbrook Greenway Trail parking lot at McDonald Hollow. • Continue the design and complete construction documents for the Clay Street Sidewalk and Roadway Improvement project. • Continue design of and public outreach for the Draper Road Streetscape project.
