Founders Day Celebration . To recognize 50 years of history, NRCC’s Founders Day Celebration occurred on August 30, 2019. The college held a picnic on the lawn of the campus in Dublin, with many retirees and current employees attending. Three former college presidents attended including Dr. W. Robert “Bob” Sullins (president from 1969
the Crooked Road Ramblers, Crossroads Station, Gravel Road, Java Brothers, Joey Cox and Company, John Viers, The New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters, Olen and Frances Gardner, and Whitetop Mountain. The club also sponsored both a fall and spring paid show. Musicians who performed at those shows included Daily and Vincent; Gene Watson and
T he mall expansion in 2016 allowed NRCC to increase course offerings to students. In addition, our student resources office has made a huge impact with the food pantry and lending of laptops. More students are able to take classes from anywhere. Also, having more advisors and student services staff at the mall has really helped serve students’ needs beyond academics, which helps them succeed. Having updated computers and furniture has provided an aesthetically pleasing, organized workspace at the mall. The addition of CLAS, Navigate, and other programs help with student outreach. Additional software has been added to our testing centers to help keep up with new technology. Roger Atkins directed the club until 2017, at which time Tim Jones assumed responsibility. ComicCon . Organized by Gary Bryant, library specialist for circulation, the first ComicCon was held in the fall of 2014 featuring artists, authors, and dealers from around the New River Valley and beyond. Held annually through 2019, ComicCon included panel discussions, a costume parade, and food vendors. Friday Night Lights . Sponsored by student services, Friday Night Lights started in Fall 2019 to promote the college at service area high school football and basketball games. At this event, college information is distributed, and NRCC student services staff and volunteers are available to answer questions. A raffle for merchandise at the college bookstore is held during the games.
Student Awards/Recognition
During this decade, NRCC Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) students continued to win state and national leadership competitions. In 2011 seven NRCC students, including Kaylynn Brennan, Rikki Brown, Majorie Martin, Lauren Phillips, Carla Anderson, Neil Huss, and Cindy McPeak, placed first, second, or third at the Virginia State Leadership Conference. At the 2012 PBL state competition, Margie Tabor, Pamela Rutherford, Kandice McClure, Brittany Adams, Eric Rasmussen, Kaylynn Oliver, and Lauren Phillips won awards.
