• Decompose behavior in sufficient detail • When a function can be uniquely performed by a single component STOP DECOMPOSING • When a function cannot be uniquely performed by a single component CONTINUE DECOMPOSING IT FURTHER • Preserve inputs, outputs, performance, and exits (i.e., preserve behavior) throughout decomposition and allocation • Refine the physical architecture concurrently, as required The objective is congruence between behavioral and physical architectures
