Literacy Matters - Winter 2020
TRY IT OUT How much time do you dedicate to word study (prefix, suffix, root), vocabulary instruction, or academic language instruction? 1. Take stock of the vocabulary and academic language strategies you use already. Can you tweak those strategies to make them more inclusive? Consider retiring some strategies and replacing them with one or two of the ones illustrated here. 2. Exchange one of your tried and true graphic organizers for Peer Teaching 2.0 (Table 2). After you’ve used it, survey your students using google forms to see what they thought. Share the data with your class. 3. Exchange one of your go-to novels for a high-interest young adult novel by a listed author in Figure 1 or a podcast. After, use the poll everywhere app to get anonymous, instant feedback from students. Table 3 . Suggestions for implementation designed by (Reeves, 2020) for this publication.
