 Elke Schneider is Professor of Literacy, Special Education and Second Language Learning at Winthrop University where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in literacy, Special Education and ESOL. She received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics at the University of Eichstatt, Germany with a specialization in Learning Disabilities and foreign/second language acquisition. Over the past 25 years, she has written and presented on this topic nationally and internationally. Her area of specialty includes promoting research-evidenced multisensory, structured, metacognitive literacy (MSML) practices among undergraduate, graduate and inservice teachers. She has done so for a 5-year period in four languages in Luxembourg, Europe, and through two large federal grants over the past eight years that have prepared hundreds of South Carolina K-12 teachers to meet English language learner needs leading many to receive ESOL certification. Additionally, she has trained hundreds of teachers through the South Carolina Title III office in MSML research- evidenced practices to meet English language learner needs.
