When people ask me how I raised over $78 million in grant funding, I sometimes smile and say, “By writing like I mean it, and meaning what I write.” Of course, it wasn’t always that clear to me. When I began my journey in the early 1980s as a young faculty member with more passion than polish, grant writing was still a mysterious process — cloaked in jargon, governed by gatekeepers, and riddled with rejection.
I learned quickly that writing grants wasn’t just about proposals. It was about positioning, persistence, and, most importantly, people.
