Stop Calling Them Volunteers: Servant Leadership as Transformational Leadership in Action by Hugh Ballou
Volunteers
For decades, the nonprofit sector has relied on a single word to describe the people who power its mission: volunteers. It sounds harmless—even honorable. But in practice, that word carries an assumption that quietly undermines excellence, accountability, and transformational impact. “The people we call volunteers are not casual helpers. They are servant leaders —and servant leadership lives inside transformational leadership.” When we say “volunteer,” we often imply optional effort, undefined expectations, and a tolerance for mediocrity. We excuse poor structure by telling ourselves, “ They’re giving their time, so we can’t ask too much.” That assumption is not only false, but also destructive to mission-driven leadership. The truth is this: the people we call volunteers are not casual helpers. They are servant leaders. Servant Leadership Lives Inside Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership is fundamentally about vision. It is about seeing what is possible, naming it clearly, and inviting others into meaningful work that creates lasting change.
