Culture

Audit your ecosystem. What are others doing? What are they missing? Name your superpower. What do you do better, faster, deeper, or more relationally? Then distill it into this framework: “We help [WHO] achieve [WHAT], in a way that’s [HOW], because we believe [WHY].” For example: “We help refugee women become economic leaders through trauma-informed entrepreneurship training—because rebuilding from war must include rebuilding dignity.” That’s a UVP. That’s a cause people can carry. THE WHEN: Earlier Than You Think, More Often Than You’d Expect Your UVP isn’t a one-time statement. It’s a living element of culture. You don’t just “use” it when writing a case statement or filming a video. You live it: When you onboard a new team member When a board member speaks to potential funders When a donor asks, “So… what do you actually do?” When you post on social media or introduce a guest speaker When should you develop it? Now. Before your next campaign. Before your next pitch. Before your culture slips into confusion. When should you repeat it? Always. Until your whole team can recite it—not because it was memorized, but because it was internalized. THE BELIEF SYSTEM: The Culture of Clarity Every nonprofit needs a belief system about its voice and visibility. Here’s the culture we champion for purpose-driven communications: Clarity is an act of justice. If your mission is urgent, your message must be unmistakable. Authenticity outlasts performance. Don’t try to sound like others. Sound like yourself —clearly, courageously, consistently. Every organization has a distinct thumbprint. Don’t dilute your identity in an effort to appeal to everyone. Impact is always specific. Your value is not your activity. It’s your transformation. Tasks don’t inspire loyalty. Change does. Internal alignment precedes external growth. If your staff and board can’t articulate your UVP, the public never will. This is more than a communication strategy. It’s identity work. Closing Thought: It's Not What You Do—It's What You Mean In the nonprofit world, where burnout is common and missions are many, clarity becomes a balm. A rally cry. A renewal of why we began in the first place. So, take the time. Do the digging. Define your unique value with the gravity it deserves. Because when you know what makes you matter—others will, too.
