Before our first team meeting after we arrive, please CAREFULLY read pages 4-6 and answer the questions after each section.

campus guidelines

Be a considerate and thoughtful team member. Think of others . We are a team. Any bad decisions or behavior on campus could impact the entire group. Be conservative of resources . Electricity and water have a very high cost. Large teams strain these resources. Whether you are eating a meal at the base or hanging out in the common areas, clean up after yourself . Keep your personal space tidy. Be on time for ALL team gatherings/meetings/departures. Don’t make the team wait on you. This includes devotions and breakfast. Since we share a base with others you are expected to respect quiet hours (stay in your room and don’t be loud). NOTE: Each day starts EARLY with team devotions. Make sure you are getting enough rest at night. THINGS WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO SAY...BUT WE ARE... Men should not be alone in a bedroom with a woman (and vice versa). Use common areas on campus for conversations, not dorm rooms. Maintain healthy boundaries (hands to self, personal space). No romantic involvement. No inappropriate innuendo, suggestive conversation or actions. Follow dress code. Ask if you aren’t sure. Address concerns in a Christian manner (going to your brother/sister first or by getting a team LEADER). Your base camp is your home away from home. You are free to roam the campus without restriction. Keep in mind, this is not only where you’ll stay during your trip, but it’s also home to others. Please demonstrate respect and care for the property.

team safety guidelines

CLEANLINESS Please avoid drinking any water from the community as it is not clean. As you are walking through the communities please be aware of streams, puddles and anything else that looks suspicious or unclean. Do not buy/eat food from street vendors. If you are offered tea or biscuits in a home, feel free to eat those, but kindly refuse any other food. CHILDREN Remember to ask parents for permission before taking children to different parts of the camp as they may not be able to find their way home. Pease ask the Mama if you are permitted to pick them up prior to doing so. SURROUNDINGS As you prepare to go out each day it is best to bring the least amount of stuff possible. Only bring the necessities - Bible, cube, pen, water bottle and any giveaway candy/Bibles, wipes/toilet paper, snack and/or water flavoring packs/Liquid IV. As you are out in the communities be aware of your bags and avoid leaving them unattended. Please limit your bling (rings, watches, jewelry, etc.). Be aware of who may be watching you. Although we want to preach the Gospel to as many people as possible, it is extremely difficult to do so to a large group of unruly, drunk men/women. Therefore, we ask that you stay away from any large groups of men/women drinking. Pray for them as you walk by!

ACCIDENTS & INJURIES If a child or anyone comes up to you with an open wound of any sort, we ask that you do not attempt to bandage or care for the wound in any way, but rather ask someone for help. Example: A child falls during one of our kids events and scratches their knee. Do not pick them up, but comfort from a distance and ask a Mama or missionary for help. GROUPS It is best to always stay in an approved group, which is at least two of your team members, and a translator. Stay in your ministry group at all times. As you are out in the communities please stay within eye and ear shot from each other at all times. Please listen to your mission leaders, staff, interns for safety and direction while out on ministry. You are not allowed to switch groups during ministry. MISCELLANEOUS Don’t give out your address, phone number, Facebook/IG, Snapchat or any personal information. Do not make promises (direct or implied) that you can’t keep. Avoid obligating Launch or the missionary to any future promise or task. Never hand out candy, tracts, or toys in a large crowd of people. NEVER. Please be sensitive when taking pictures. We don’t want to look like tourists. Most love to be photographed, but if the situation is questionable, ask first.

Why should you avoid giving out your social media or personal contact information to nationals?

interpreter guidelines

Speak slowly and pronounce your words clearly. Stick to simple words, and be mindful not to use Americanisms that will be misunderstood or difficult to translate. Steer clear from religious words that could also be difficult to understand. When ministering alongside them, direct your conversation towards the national that you are ministering to, not the interpreter. Say a whole thought before pausing for the translating, but please don't forget to pause for the interpretation. Part of your ministry here will also be toward some of the translators you will be working with. Some of them are new in their faith and are still learning. Your time ministering alongside them is a great opportunity to get to know them and encourage them in their pursuit of Christ!

How can YOU encourage a translator during your time with them?

Why is it important to say entire thoughts, as opposed to short phrases, when speaking for translation?

giving guidelines

If there is someone that God has placed on your heart to help financially or with a gift please talk with your team leader BEFORE saying ANYTHING to the national or the local church partner. We have certain procedures for giving that protect both you and the national that allows for transparency, visibility, and accountability in the giving process. Should you feel led to give a gift of any kind to anyone (including people you meet in the communities, staff volunteers, interns, or staff members) , please be sure to ask your team leader first. All gifts must be handled with visibility and accountability. If you attend a church service, you may give to the church during offering. Be generous but don’t go overboard as it will set unrealistic expectations for all future visitors from the missionary. We highly value your time and want to protect your experience with us. Just so you are aware, please know that ministry volunteers are not permitted to solicit from guests.

Why is it important that we follow these specific guidelines for “giving” to nationals, local churches etc?

SIDE 6 Through Him alone we can be forgiven and have eternal life Knowing about these things aren’t enough. Must Trust Him to save us If you aren’t, your sins are not forgiven When you die….with Him or separated from Him Whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life. Those who don’t – the wrath of God is upon them. Believe in your heart – confess with your mouth – what about YOU!?

testimonies at-a-glance

There are three types of stories that are especially helpful to keep in mind as you go out on ministry: 1) Your Salvation Story 2) A testimony about healing or deliverance and 3) A testimony about a time in your life when God proved Himself faithful.

A SALVATION STORY HOW did you know you were lost, a sinner and needed saving? Was there an event, a crisis or addiction? WHEN did you know that you needed Jesus to save you? Your testimony story begins THERE. From that angle, share what your life was like BEFORE you knew you needed Jesus. Then, share HOW you gave up control of your life. How did you learn about Him? How did you know what to do next? What made you finally surrender? Finally, explain how your life has changed after you started following Him.

Don’t get distracted with side stories. Stay focused on how Jesus saved you from your sin.

A TESTIMONY ABOUT HEALING OR DELIVERANCE In addition to your personal Salvation Story, maybe there was a time in your life that you were healed of sickness or delivered from addiction. How would you communicate the backstory in a simple way? How long were you dealing with the issue? How did you know you were healed or delivered? What has your life been like since? How has it changed your view of God?

A TIME WHEN GOD PROVED HIMSELF FAITHFUL (through death or other circumstance)

Our testimony may also include times when God proved Himself faithful. In spite of the chaos, challenges or circumstances tell about a time when God made it very clear to you that He was and is taking care of you.

the ZCC biblical view

Christianity The Bible teaches that “You cannot serve two masters…” Matt 6:24. Mark 7:9-13 “You reject the command of God that you may keep your tradition….making the word of God no effect”. Matt 15:1-6 “Make the commands of God of no effect by your traditions” Christianity The Bible teaches 1 Tim 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and Man, the man Jesus Christ.” & John 14:6 “...no one comes to the Father, except through Me.”

ZCC is a mixture of traditional African beliefs and Biblical truths. They use ‘sangomas’ that are responsible for physical and spiritual healing, as well as counselling about the future. Sangomas and Mediums are all interchangeable terms (Biblically speaking). They may call upon the dead or refer to them ancestors. ZCC teach that Bishop Ramarumo Lekganyane is the mediator between God and man and can preform supernatural acts. The Bishop is believed to have supernatural powers (believed to be the mediator be tween man and God). This is the reason why most worship songs are about him. Lekganyane is referred to as "Ncomo', which translates to “Cow.” A cow is regarded as the most important animal in the traditional African beliefs. ZCC instructs members in the use of faith mechanisms. Drinking of tea or coffee for healing, wearing of cords for protection (usually given by Sangomas), use of water for purification, carrying of staffs & wearing of badges for membership identification.Blessed Water - As part of ‘Faith Healing” they purge themselves of spiritual and physical sickness by drinking large amounts of water and then force themselves to vomit it out. Joko Tea & Coffee - Like the water it will be drunk and vomited out on occasion. The tea is prescribed by the Priest/Pastor to be drunk after a prophecy about illness or misfortune. The tea has healing and protecting properties. Sometimes it is instructed to mix ash with the water or tea and spread it on door posts and window frames for protection. Blessed Water - As part of ‘Faith Healing” they purge themselves of spiritual and physical sickness by drinking large amounts of water and then force themselves to vomit it out.

Christianity teaches that Jesus is our source or Healing- Isaiah 53:4 & Matt 8:17, Protection - Isaiah 41:10. As Christians we are identifiable by the fruit of the spirit not by badges, clothing, staffs, or any outward markings - Gal 5:22-23

ZCC does not condemn sin, but rather encourages church rules.

Christianity “If we confess our sins, He is just to forgive us our sins…” - 1 John 1:6-9, “Confess your sins so you may be healed” James 5:16, In order for us to have “fellowship” with Christ we need to confess our sins. Most importantly we at at war with sin…our sin. Romans 8:13 “Live according to the flesh you will die, but by the spirit put to death sin and you will live.”

ZCC a person is saved through baptism, by dipping them in water 3 times. Baptisms will commonly be done in the name of Lekganyane.

Christianity teaches that “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” - Romans 9:13, Luke 23:39-43 is the story of the thief on the cross. He is saved that very day without any baptism. Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith…”

ZCC teaches that it permissible to consult ancestors Christianity teaches the opposite (see later)

ZCC & The Bible - ZCC use the same Bible as the Christian Church. There is a heavy importance placed on the Old Testament over the New Testament. The Bible is used as guide for how to act rather than know God.

Casting spells, mixing up brews, reading palms and the future with cards - who do you think is giving this illusion of power!!?? Talking to dead relatives or calling them up - how does one acquire such ability? From demonic forces - Your not speaking to dead friends but to demons. There can only be 2 sides that you stand on! You’re either for God or you are against him there is not a middle ground! 2Kings 17:29-40 29 But these various groups of foreigners also continued to worship their own gods. In town after town where they lived, they placed their idols at the pagan shrines that the people of Samaria had built. 30 Those from Babylon worshiped idols of their god Succoth-benoth. Those from Cuthah worshiped their god Nergal. And those from Hamath worshiped Ashima. 31 The Avvites worshiped their gods Nibhaz and Tartak. And the people from Sepharvaim even burned their own children as sacrifices to their gods Adrammelech and Anammelech. 32 These new residents worshiped the LORD, but they also appointed from among themselves all sorts of people as priests to offer sacrifices at their places of worship. 33 And though they worshiped the LORD, they continued to follow their own gods according to the religious customs of the nations from which they came. 34 And this is still going on today. They continue to follow their former practices instead of truly worshiping the LORD and obeying the decrees, regulations, instructions, and commands he gave the descendants of Jacob, whose name he changed to Israel. 35 For the LORD had made a covenant with the descendants of Jacob and commanded them: “Do not worship any other gods or bow before them or serve them or offer sacrifices to them. 36 But worship only the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt with great strength and a powerful arm. Bow down to him alone, and offer sacrifices only to him. 37 Be careful at all times to obey the decrees, regulations, instructions, and commands that he wrote for you. You must not worship other gods. 38 Do not forget the covenant I made with you, and do not worship other gods. 39 You must worship only the LORD your God. He is the one who will rescue you from all your enemies.”

daily devotions

understanding daily devotions Daily devotions are times set aside each day dedicated to relating with God. When people speak of daily devotions, they are usually referring to a time of reading their Bible, doing a Bible study, or reading a devotional book. This is often accompanied by a time of prayer. Some devotional times may simply be bathed in pray or include worship music. No matter the format, having this daily time is critical to your ability to do ministry. Because of the value we have gleaned from our teams having personal and team devotions with God, we prioritize this initiative into our daily activities. Team Training Day Lesson

Read John 15:1-8. Daily devotions are spiritual disciplines that help us get to know God and ensures we stay connected to Him. What do these Scriptures teach us about our need for connection to the True Vine?

How do we become “disconnected” from the Vine? and What are the results of being disconnected?

Satan is the father of lies. He is a counterfeit and seeks to deceive us by twisting God’s Word. Read John 8:32. How can we know the Truth?

Jesus showed us in multiple Scriptures how He was intentional in connecting with the Father. Mark 1:35: “ In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.” When did Jesus get alone in prayer?

Scripture points out that it was still dark and Jesus “got up”. Why is this significant?

How does Romans 12:1-2 encourage you to “get up”?

Why do you believe Jesus left the house?

What’s the benefit of going to a secluded place?

What did Jesus do during this time?

READ Acts 14: 26-27 What did Paul and Barnabas do when they returned from their trip?

What’s the point? Why is this important? How could it impact your church? Your family?

Read Philippians 1:6. Sometimes it’s hard to leave the missions experience behind, especially the people you have prayed and shared with. How does this verse provide reassurance to you, even if you never see them again?

MOSES CAN TESTIFY TO THIS REALITY: READ EXODUS 32 BEFORE PROCEEDING... Moses had been on a mission. He was spending time with God and then reporting to the people as God instructed. From Exodus 24:18, we know that it was 40 days, and if you add the previous trips “up the mountain,” it was a little longer. During this period Moses received the 10 Commandments, various laws for governing the people, property rights, personal injury, and more. From the very lips of God, Moses received guidelines for living a life pleasing to God, a plan for developing a community committed to God, and a blueprint for the place to worship God. Obviously, this was big stuff! Moses had been in God’s presence. Now imagine, for more than “40 days,” Moses had been on assignment with God. The time came for him to descend the mountain and report back to the people all that he had seen, experienced, and heard. As is the case with many missionaries, Moses did not come home to what he had hoped and expected. BEWARE: SHARING YOUR GOD ENCOUNTERS CAN HAVE ITS CHALLENGES Have you ever seen a great movie and tried to describe it to someone? Something is usually lost in the interpretation. Really, unless they see it or experience it, they just don’t get it. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It is just how it is. This was your journey with God, not theirs. Don’t get too frustrated by getting hung up on the fact that no one fully understands. Some people will understand more than others.

WHAT 2 THINGS HAPPENED IN VERSE 1 IN REGARDS TO THE PEOPLE? 1 2

You may face similar attitudes from close friends and family upon your return home. There may be a struggle to understand their lack of interest. Sometimes it is difficult to find people willing to just listen to your story. If this is the case, consider this: Your friends and family may not have become corrupted like the Israelites, but they have not been to the mountaintop with you. While you have been out of your normal routines, they have continued in theirs. While you were stretched beyond imagination, they may have been plain bored. While you witnessed God at work, they may have just gone to work. While God has molded and changed you, they may be the same as they were when you left. Let’s face it: Coming back to the same environment as a different person can have some challenges.

Returning home and getting back to normal can be challenging for some as the their personal sense of “normal” has evolved. You must be intentional about your thoughts and actions over the coming weeks. There are several contributing factors to re-entry stress. 1) You are being caught by surprise; 2) You do not anticipate change and consequently are unprepared to cope; 3) Your values, once taken for granted and even highly cherished, now seem of lesser significance or of little importance. Your way of thinking, your manner, and your responses to many situations have been changing. COMMON SYMPTOMS AND EFFECTS OF RE-ENTRY STRESS 1. Disorientation: feeling out of place, not fitting in. Work feels different now. Church “life” or services may seem unfulfilling and home can be challenging. 2. Feelings of loneliness, isolation, or being lost in the crowd 3. Restlessness: a desire to “get away” from those who don’t seem to understand or care 4. Feeling that nobody understands your experience or that nobody cares 5. Feeling tired and listless 6. Critical attitude toward home country, its waste, extravagance, wrong way of doing things, etc. 7. Loss of identity: just “another cog in a big wheel” 8. Retreat, withdrawal, lack of concern 9. Confusion over conflicting attitudes and responses 10. Rejection of overseas experiences or a desire to forget and not talk about them Often these changes are not apparent until you are back in your home culture. ALL BY MYSELF (the isolationist) - A common re-entry coping mechanism is the tendency to isolate and be alienated. A person who responds in this way pulls away from other like-minded people and avoids interactions. They can express strong, judgmental attitudes towards their own home culture, including their church. They may also daydream about the short-term trip, holding onto memories - unable to move forward. THIS NEVER HAPPENED (the denier)- This person goes “native” by reverting immediately back to conventional norms. They resume life as if nothing has happened and they don’t translate the impact of the short-term trip experiences into the rest of life. Sometimes they are so shaken by trip, they even step BACK from their involvement in church life. ALL IN FOR CHANGE - This person accepts the reality of transitions between 2 cultures. They relate with the home culture in a way that doesn’t compromise or negate new values of lessons learned from the trip. They can recognize that changes have occured in their life and heart and will work to incorporate them. There 3 types of ways people typically respond in the short and long term:

Just because the physical part of the trip is over, doesn’t mean your spiritual journey should end. As you return home, you should remain just as diligent in your prayer and study time as you were BEFORE you left. Doing so, helps sooth the transition back into your day-to-day life, grows you deeper in your personal relationship with Jesus and prepares you to further serve others. DAY 1 Scripture: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17)

DAY 2 Scripture: For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. (Galatians 5:13-15)

CLEAN UP YOUR SPACE We want our base to look as good when you leave as the day you found it. Throw trash away. Check bathroom areas. ITEMS TO DONATE Missionaries often greatly appreciate snacks and goodies from the states. If you wish to donate leftover items to leave behind, ask Team Leader for drop-off location and times. Do not make donations directly to interns/staff, translators, drivers etc. All donations should go through the Team Leader first. You may decide to leave: Toiletries (even if partially used) Shirts/Shorts/Pants (on rare occasions - usually Africa) Shoes Unspent converted currency Snacks or food IMPORTANT NOTE: 1) Do not check-in on the airline app, unless directed to do so by your team leader. 2) Ensure you have the CBP MPC App downloaded on your phone for quick entry to the US.

carry-on & security details

Even though we won’t be going through the American TSA security at the airport, you must pack your Carry on bag to follow TSA standards. Liquids in one quart sized bag under 3oz. Any spare cell battery packs must be placed in a carry on bag – NEVER in a checked bag. Do you have your passport? Is your cell charger in your carry-on bag? Is your phone charged? You may not return to the US with fruits, jerky, veggies of any kind. Don’ t even try. Even though you can buy them at airport stores, you won’t be allowed to bring them on the plane when you go through the 2nd gate security check (see below). You will be processed through security 2 times: the first, at normal check in; the second, is a special check in that happens as you are literally boarding the plane because your plane is originating from a foreign country and headed to the US. This is known as the “gate security check” When you get in line at the gate to board the plane, listen to instructions and proceed through the 2nd security as directed. No lone rangers. Your bag will be HAND inspected by a trained agent that will ensure your carry on bag is safe and aligns with TSA standards. You are not allowed to take water or sodas on the plane - even if you purchased it after the first security.

USA arrival guidelines

As we land, the Team Leader will ask you to fill out the MPC app while on the airplane to expedite entry into the USA.

To make this go as quickly as possible, use the restroom BEFORE the plane lands with the understanding that we won’t stop for a restroom upon landing UNTIL we have gone through customs FIRST.

Proceed to baggage. Work as a team to collect all bags.

Your collected bags will then be immediately dropped off AGAIN to be re-scanned according to TSA standards.

Proceed to security for another TSA security check. You may be asked to remove shoes, liquids, etc.

You will proceed to US customs. Enter the Mobile App line and wait your turn to be checked back in to the USA.
