Welcome We are so grateful you are here to join us for this beautiful simcha for our son, Jonah Fielder. Jonah has studied hard this past year in preparation for this day, and we could not be more proud. We recognize that you have come from near and far—you have traveled, and taken time from your busy lives to be here with us. Thank you. Thank you for re fl ecting the love back to us that we feel so deeply for all of you. Today, Jonah assumes the religious, spiritual and ethical responsibilities that come with being a Jewish adult by becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Now, as a full member of the Jewish community, Jonah will be able to be counted in a minyan, a quorum of 10, the minimum required for holding a prayer service or reading from the Torah. The centerpiece of today’s celebration will be when Jonah has his very fi rst aliyah; the fi rst time he will be permitted to recite blessings over the Torah on behalf of the congregation. He will also chant part of this week’s Torah portion. We hope, if this is your fi rst Bar Mitzvah, that you will learn something about Judaism. If this is your fi rst time joining the beautiful Blacksburg Jewish Community Center congregation, we welcome you. If you are joining us virtually, we are so grateful for your time. TORAH Deuteronomy Chapter 15:7-11

7 If there will be among you a needy person, from one of your brothers in one of your cities, in your land the Lord; Your God, is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, and you shall not close your hand from your needy brother. 8 Rather, you shall open your hand to him, and you shall lend him suf fi cient for his needs, which he is lacking. 9 Beware, lest there be in your heart an unfaithful thought, saying, “The seventh year, the year of release has approached,” and you will begrudge your needy brother and not give him, and he will cry out to the Lord against you, and it will be a sin to you. 10 You shall surely give him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him; for because of this thing the Lord, your God, will bless you in all your work and in all your endeavors. 11 For there will never cease to be needy within the land. Therefore, I command you, saying, you shall surely open your hand to your brother, to your poor one, and to your needy one in your land. 2 You shall slaughter the Passover sacri fi ce to the Lord, your God, [of the] fl ock, and [the Festival sacri fi ces of the] cattle, in the place which the Lord will choose to establish His Name therein. 3 You shall not eat leaven with it; for seven days you shall eat with it matzoth, the bread of af fl iction, for in haste you went out of the land of Egypt, so that you shall remember the day when you went out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life. 4 And no leaven shall be seen with you within all your border for seven days; neither shall any of the fl esh you slaughter on the preceding day in the afternoon, remain all night until the morning. 5 You shall not sacri fi ce the Passover offering within any of your cities, which the Lord, your God, is giving you. 6 Except at the place which the Lord, your God, will choose to establish His Name-there you shall slaughter the Passover offering in the afternoon, as the sun sets, at the appointed time that you went out of Egypt. 7 And you shall roast [it] and eat [it] in the place which the Lord, your God, will choose, and you shall turn away in the morning and go to your dwellings. 8 For six days you shall eat matzoth, and on the seventh day there shall be a halt to the Lord, your God. You shall not do any work [on it].

Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust, and not be afraid; for God is my strength and my song, He also has become my salvation. With joy shall you draw water out of the wells of salvation. And in that day shall you say: Praise God, call upon His name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His name is exalted. Sing to God, for He has done great things; this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion; for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. It is customary to throw candy at the Bar Mitzvah boy when he has completed the prayer after the Haftorah, to wish him a “sweet” life as he makes the transition to adulthood. (Please wait for Eric’s cue to start throwing candy.). Children are invited to come up to the bima to retrieve and eat the candy once it has been thrown.

Heartfelt Gratitudes We are utmost grateful for current and past Directors of the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center Sunday School. You continue to imbibe our community with a love of Jewish learning and Jewish traditions. We are particularly grateful to Eric Hallerman for his expert tutoring, willingness to invite Jonah into his home, for being our expert Gabbai this morning, and his recording of the chants of the morning service. Thank you to Muriel Kranowski for her recordings of the Torah portions. Thank you to our wonderful family and friends for making the time to be here with us today.
