Hinge Current Transfer A sealed, high pressure contact joint is used whenever two mating parts must move relative to one another and are also required to carry current. A primary example of this is the blade hinge assembly for the TTR‐8 and TTR‐6 vertical break switches. The current is transferred from the aluminum terminal casting through two threaded hinge pin assemblies. The threads are spring biased to assure maximum contact pressure from the hinge pin to the mating hinge casting. The threaded current transfer chambers are sealed from outside contamination by use of O‐rings. The contact threads are also lubricated which is effective for the life of the switch. This current transfer design has been employed over 50 years with great success. The design is simple but effective. It does not rely on any type of shunt to bridge the joint which can fray from work hardening and loose current carrying capability.

Assembly of hinge to blade clamp is threaded connection similar to hinge pin assembly. Note “O” ring seal which keeps out contamination from threads. Hinge pin to tie casting current transfer is accomplished by expanding the hinge pin with tapered sleeve and bolt inserted in hinge pin.
