PARTNERS PAWS AND Empowering and transforming the lives of people with disabilities - one dog, one person, one family, one community at a time Helping to Bring Joy and Healing
Wali and Carilion Children’s
There is a new face around the halls of Carilion Children’s Tanglewood Center, and he is making quite an impact. “He just brings joy to all those around him! When people see him, their faces just light up,” says Tara Mitchell, Ph.D. The newest Carilion employee looks just a little bit different from the medical professionals he works alongside. Wali, a Saint Francis Facility Dog, is a goofy, silly, friendly Labrador Retriever who always seems to draw out a smile. Wali started his Saint Francis journey when he was eight weeks old, just a little roly-poly puppy, eager to learn.

A message from Cabell
Welcome to our 2024 Annual Report! You will see charts, graphs, and numbers throughout these pages. I hope that you will agree that we had a productive year, and we are continuing to deliver on the promise of empowering and transforming the lives of people with disabilities - one dog, one person, one family, one community at a time. An Annual Report reminds me of a yearly medical exam - here you can check our vital signs and measure our progress. I spend a fair amount of my time monitoring these numbers and making tweaks to be sure we stay on track. Sometimes what gets lost in the numbers is our most important vital sign: our staff. These are the people that are the beating heart of Saint Francis Service Dogs. We span six generations, from our 20’s to our 80’s. We come from all areas of the country - from Georgia to Minnesota - and from all walks of life. Some of us love the outdoors, and some of us crave the comforts of home. We have our own hobbies and passions, from astronomy to music, reading to hiking, bourbon to antique bicycles. Many of us have worked here for more years than we care to count. It would be fun to say we are a big happy family. That’s not quite true. We fight, we disagree, and we grumble. Some people hang out together. Some prefer not to. Some understand one another easily, some find each other inscrutable. That’s pretty normal. What is special are the things we have in common.
We are all curious. Everyone here is a natural learner, regardless of education level. We are all interested in the world and curious about how it works - whether it’s how to build something, how the night sky turns, or how to play a difficult piece of music. We are all willing to listen and take on new information. We are all committed. Everyone here has gone the extra mile and will do it again. We have all been asked to grow in order to better serve the mission, and we have all done the work to make that growth happen, painful as it usually is. We are all focused on quality. Everyone here believes in providing excellent, beautifully-trained, lovingly cared-for service dogs to people that need them. We believe in setting the teams up for the greatest success so they can reach their goals. Everyone here knows that the lives we enrich by doing this work enrich our own. So, when you peer behind the charts and graphs, you will find us - a band of mismatched people, bound together by what I believe are rare and precious gifts. When you add in our volunteers, our donors, our partners, and - of course - our dogs, you have something truly special. There is nothing quite like Saint Francis Service Dogs. Thank you for joining us on this journey. I can’t imagine better company for the trip.
Executive Director
We are all focused on quality. Everyone here believes in providing excellent, beautifully-trained, lovingly cared-for service dogs to people that need them.

Helping to Bring Joy and Healing continued from cover He began his training in our Prison Pup Program, and even then, it was clear he had a knack for making people feel just a little bit better, a little bit brighter, and a whole lot more joyful. When we combined that special trait with the more than 40 specialized tasks and commands he learned in Advanced Training, Wali seemed like the perfect fit for this important new role. “I think it is incredible that I began the process just months before Wali was born! We were both working towards this ultimate goal, just in different ways,” says Dr. Mitchell. Tara Mitchell, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and Wali’s primary handler, applied for a Saint Francis Facility Dog in 2022, after years of researching how a facility dog could positively impact the lives of the young patients she works with. Our team officially matched Wali and Carilion Children’s last year, and after completing Team Training in July, Wali and Dr. Mitchell quickly got to work. Wali is the first Saint Francis Facility Dog placed in a pediatric healthcare setting in the region. He has been integrated in innovative ways at Carilion, interacting with children in behavioral health, including physical, occupational, and speech therapies. Recently, Wali was introduced to a child going through outpatient physical therapy. The child was able to work closely with Wali, giving him commands to follow and tasks to complete. Having the calm, steady presence of a facility dog in the room helped boost the child’s self-confidence and decrease pain and anxiety. The therapist says this young patient looked forward to each session with Wali, providing vital motivation to work towards reaching their therapy goals. “ Wali’s unique skills are already helping patients reach their treatment goals through motivation, positive modeling, and bringing joy to each session,” Dr. Mitchell says. And while he certainly helps bring that joy to the children he meets, Wali is also making an impact on the doctors, nurses, and staff he is now a part of. “I have specifically been told that he decreases blood pressure in the room at meetings. People stop by the team space to get some ‘Wali time’. He can quickly shift the mood of a room to a more joyful space, allowing us to be more positive and creative,” says Dr. Mitchell. And we know as Wali settles into his new job, he will continue bringing his own special kind of medicine to Carilion Children’s. “The wait was hard, but he is so worth it,” Dr. Mitchell says.

A PUP’S progress
I have so much to tell you!
I am over a year old now, and so I don’t think I am really a puppy anymore. I am ready to be treated like a proper dog now. My puppy raiser (her name is Cabell, and she knows a lot about Saint Francis) says that would be fine if I would just ACT like a proper dog, but whatever. You know how she is. First of all, we had Christmas, and I didn’t get anything I wanted. We do this thing where we switch houses with our siblings sometimes, so I went to my brother Salem’s house for a week before the holidays. They have a cat and a toddler. I decided cats are fascinating, and I LOVE babies. So I asked for a cat and a baby for Christmas. I did not get them. I am still trying to figure out what went wrong there. Everyone says I am a good dog, so what gives? Now I am getting ready for a lot of tests. There are some physical tests - they are going to check my hips and my elbows. And they will do a genetic test, and I think there is a test for my heart and other stuff too. All this is to see if I may be good mother material. I am the only girl in my litter, so a lot is riding on this. I don’t really care so long as I get a baby out of it. Maybe a kitten. And I will have some other tests coming up too. I already had my Intermediate Puppy Evaluation, which I think I did just fine on. Some of my brothers did better, but they are overachievers, if you ask me. These tests have skills in them that I am practicing with my puppy raiser. My focus is better, and I am starting to get the hang of it. The main thing I have to do is figure out what she
is trying to tell me. Sometimes, she does a good job, I know what to do, and I am happy to do it. Sometimes, I just sit, stare at her, and concentrate real hard. It rarely works, but I’m trying, and that seems to make her happy.
As for me, I am always happy. I have my friends, my classes, my people, and lots of playtime. Life is interesting and fun.
Now, if I can just find a toddler and a cat…

A Place to Reflect The Luke Woody Memorial Garden
Nestled at the foot of the Saint Francis property is a very special place. It holds the memories of people and pets who will never be forgotten. It honors and celebrates the incredible bond between human and animal. It is a place where a quiet walk around the pond reminds you of how precious our connections with others truly are. The Luke Woody Memorial Garden, constructed and dedicated in 2013, was made possible by Jo Lynn Draper, a long-time supporter, board member, and important part of the Saint Francis family. The beautiful statue commemorates Jo Lynn’s late son, Luke, and his dog Boba, who continued to bring comfort to their family after Luke’s passing. In the twelve years since it was created, the Luke Woody Memorial Garden has brought comfort to
many others. Plaques honoring loved ones – both people and pets – have been permanently placed along the circular path. One of the most recent additions was purchased by Saint Francis volunteer and friend, Allison Angell. After having to say goodbye to both her sweet pups, she wanted to do something meaningful to celebrate their lives. Allison says, “It is a beautiful, peaceful spot. My family has seen the life-changing experiences a Saint Francis Service Dog makes. In our minds and hearts, there was no better place to memorialize our best little friends.” The proceeds from all plaques purchased go to support the mission of Saint Francis Service Dogs, making it possible for us to help create even more of these priceless bonds.
For more information about The Luke Woody Memorial Garden and our memorial plaques, visit our website at www.saintfrancisdogs.org/garden or contact Kari Grim at 540-342-3647x409.

With Deepest Gratitude Celebrating Dr. Mark Finkler “This year, after turning 70, I’ve made the decision to fully retire. It’s bittersweet for me, but it’s the right decision. It’s time. As a retiring physician once told me, ‘I want to leave while I am still wanted.’ I suppose I was destined to become a veterinarian. As a child, I was fascinated by science and all types of animals. In Catholic grade school, we were allowed to choose a Saint’s name at the time of our confirmation. I chose “Francis”, for Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. So, 44 years later, here I am. (I thought getting old would take longer!) I was fortunate to work with many fine veterinarians at Roanoke Animal Hospital. I sold RAH to Dr. Blaszak in 2020, knowing he would maintain the high standards required to be accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). It’s worth noting that our hospital has been AAHA accredited longer than any other animal hospital in Virginia - since 1950. To all of my clients whom I’ve met over the years, I sincerely appreciate you for entrusting me to care for your pets. I’ve always tried to treat them as I would treat my own. I’ve smiled at the joy of seeing you with a new puppy or kitten. I shared in the sadness of saying that “final goodbye” to your dying pets. I strived to reach the correct diagnosis and the correct treatment, while remaining humble enough to know that it’s impossible to always be right. For those pets I could not cure, I’m truly sorry. I’ve learned many lessons over the years. I know that for every mistake made for not knowing, ten more are made for not looking. I’ve been around long enough to know that, in medicine, the questions don’t change, only the answers. I’ve learned that modern medicine, even with all of the new diagnostic tests, cannot always provide us with the answer. I’ve accepted that these really odd cases fall under the “GOK” category - God Only Knows! While I will no longer be actively practicing, I will continue as the Veterinary Advisor for Saint Francis Service Dogs. I’ve been with them since the very beginning - over 25 years. This wonderful organization was founded in Roanoke. At every graduation, I remain amazed to see how these rowdy puppies grew up to be highly trained partners, providing a greater degree of independence for a child or adult in need of extra assistance. The end of 2024 brought with it a huge milestone for a familiar face to all of us at Saint Francis. After an illustrious career spanning more than forty years, Dr. Mark Finkler of Roanoke Animal Hospital, retired from veterinary practice. To celebrate the end of this successful chapter, we are sharing a portion of his letter to his colleagues, patients, and friends.
So, to all of you, I say farewell. I will miss you. Thank you for the memories!”
From all of us at Saint Francis - Thank you, Dr. Finkler, and congratulations!

Donor Spotlight Roanoke Animal Hospital
Dr. Tom Blaszak was first introduced to Saint Francis Service Dogs by our trusted Veterinary Advisor, Dr. Mark Finkler, after Dr. Blaszak joined the team at Roanoke Animal Hospital in 2011. Dr. Blaszak would often examine our puppies just starting their journeys to be service dogs. Our mission immediately resonated with him. “I felt it was a worthy organization that utilized the human - animal bond. As a veterinarian, animals have a large impact on my daily life and an organization that uses animals to support the needs of people really spoke to me and the impact I hope I can provide to families by keeping their animal companions safe and healthy,” says Dr. Blaszak. Roanoke Animal Hospital has been a generous supporter of Saint Francis Service Dogs for many years in many ways - something Dr. Blaszak says he has been happy to continue since taking over the practice from Dr. Finkler in 2020. Dr. Blaszak says, “I believe in the mission of Saint Francis and know all the work, time, and investment that is required to develop these puppies into service animals. Then, these trained animals are given to people with disabilities at no cost to them.”
RAH helps makes it possible for us to continue our mission by stepping up year after to year to sponsor both our Barks ‘n Rec spring fundraiser and our Graduation every fall. Recently, they added Saint Francis Service Dogs to their Loyalty program, so that their clients have the option to donate to us as well. And on top of all of the ways they help raise awareness and offer support, Roanoke Animal Hospital gives tens of thousands of dollars with in-kind donations every year through discounted veterinary care for our dogs in training. “There is no better organization to support. I have seen the impact these service animals have had on lives of the families and people they are matched with,” says Dr. Blaszak. “It’s like watching your children (puppies!) grow up and flourish. These wild, rambunctious puppies come in on their first veterinary visit and they are transformed into compassionate working companions.” Thank you, Roanoke Animal Hospital, for your care, support, and commitment to helping us change lives. It is a journey he says Roanoke Animal Hospital is proud to be a part of.

Staff Spotlight Deborah Duerk Operations Director
Deborah Duerk has always done meaningful work. She spent a large chunk of her early career – two decades to be exact – as camp director for Easter Seals Virginia, leading camping and recreation programs for kids and adults with disabilities. One day, by chance, she saw a news story about Saint Francis Service Dogs. She made a call and made a connection. They created “Saint Francis Days” at camp, where our puppies in training would come out and interact with their campers. “I was so impressed with how kind the puppy raisers and Saint Francis staff were, and how lovely they were in their interactions with our camp friends. I always had a little thought in the back of my mind that if I ever was ready to look for yet another dream job (because camp is a dream job), Saint Francis would be about as good as it could get,” Deb says. That opportunity arose in 2006, and Deb took it. She has worn many hats since then, all leading to her current position of Operations Director.
It’s a big role. Deb has her hand in just about every piece and process it takes to make our programs run smoothly and cooperatively. On any given day, she could be overseeing our ADI re-accreditation process, helping whelp our newest litter of puppies, or managing our veterinary extern program. And, when anyone yells out “Deb!” (usually the moment the Wi-Fi goes out), she is always there to help. “I love knowing that the things that I do behind the scenes to support and back up and sometimes guide the very talented folks who touch all of the operational pieces of our organization all lead to that glorious day when a partner and their very own perfect dog head out into the big wide world. It’s pretty great,” says Deb. Being a part of the Saint Francis collective is important to Deb, and it is a feeling she fosters amongst all our staff. She has the amazing ability to encounter a situation or problem, see the whole picture, and determine what got us there and what it will take to find the answer – together.

“Everyone’s Favorite Uncle” Hank Duerk
Deb says, “The level and scope of affection and support and cooperation at Saint Francis is off the charts. There’s just so much trust here. I remember thinking in my interview all those years ago that these people are so down to earth and kind and non-ego driven and WOW, do I want to be part of this. I feel the same way almost 20 years later.” “I believe that everyone deserves a chance to be the most they can be, and our dogs help their partners and their families get there, sometimes in ways that they never imagined were possible.” And Deb is such a huge part of what makes up the fabric of Saint Francis. She is always the one to organize our office get-togethers, knowing that it is often during our downtime that the most creative ideas strike. Her passions are eclectic and interesting - from history to jazz deep cuts, from hiking to refurbishing vintage bicycles. But what drives her most is her desire to continue working together for the common good - with extraordinary dogs and exceptional people - where what we do every day can help change someone’s life. “It’s so personal, and tactile, and simple; my life has been richer because of the work I’ve loved and the dogs I’ve loved. I’m beyond grateful to think that I can play a small part in bringing those two things together.”
In a nutshell, Hank Duerk is the best, nicest, kindest dog in all the land. Deb often recounts the story of his birth. She got to be there from the very moment he drew his first tiny breath, and he jumped into her heart right then and there. He is the uncle and great-uncle of many, many of our Saint Francis puppies and dogs, but he was never a service dog himself (although he’d probably be a good one). While TECHNICALLY a retriever, he’s not crazy about retrieving. During playtime in the field, he prefers to mingle with the human adults while keeping a close eye on the quirky bunch of our staff’s personal dogs he spends his workdays with. He likes naps, snuggling, chicken, his Flat Cow, and his fuzzy beach ball. His signature move is the “Hank Flop and Roll”, where he finds the perfect patch of grass to wriggle on. His sweet demeanor and quiet patience truly make him “everyone’s favorite uncle”!
Thank you, Deb! You are such an important part of our Saint Francis Family.
Hank

Volunteer Spotlight Mona and David Fazzina
One year ago, Mona and David Fazzina found themselves at Saint Francis Service Dogs for the first time – driven by their faith, love of dogs, and their desire to give their time and resources to a mission they believe in. “It is as if we have been introduced to a loving, gracious, friendly, and meaningful family. In God’s greater plan, we consider our association with Saint Francis Service Dogs to be a blessing.” Mona says, “It is one of the best things that happened to us in 2024. I imagine that it’s a bit like a slice of heaven on earth.” Since then, they have fully embraced the experience of volunteering. Mona and David are frequent sitters for our dogs in training, and Mona has just recently taken on a new role as a transport volunteer. She often makes the trek from our facility in Roanoke to Bland Correctional Center to pick up and drop off the dogs that are training in our Prison Pup Program. On top of their volunteer efforts, the Fazzinas have also given Skylit, one
of our career change dogs, a forever home.
The Fazzinas describe the experience of volunteering at Saint Francis as both humbling and enriching - making it easy to want to help in all the ways they can. ”Each time I come to Saint Francis to pick up a puppy for the weekend or for longer, and then drive away toward home, I look at the puppy in the backseat and marvel at the immense gift that has been entrusted to me. Such trust demands that we give nothing less than our best.” We simply could not do what we do without our volunteers. Thank you, Mona and David, for your passion and dedication to our mission.
Mona says, “The dogs don’t seem to realize how wonderful they are. They love so selflessly, and I feel rich beyond words to be loved like that by a dog.” Mona’s great love of dogs is a thread that has woven throughout her entire life. As a little girl, she thought she may grow up to be a veterinarian. As an adult working in the healthcare field of physical therapy, Mona would light up when therapy dogs were brought in for a session. “One of my patients once said to me, ‘Do you know that when you’re around dogs, you glow?’ Things seem to have come full circle now that I volunteer with Saint Francis and love it so much,” says Mona. Part of that love is knowing that the dogs in her care will ultimately go on to change someone’s life.
“We may never meet the person that the dog is partnered with, but it is good to know that we sowed some good seeds during our short time with the puppies - that we showered them with love and warmth and play,” Mona says.
