The first combines the tune Carol (It Came Upon the Midnight Clear) with the familiar OThou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion from Handel’s Messiah and the other is a jazzy setting of Kings of Orient (We Three Kings) written in 5/4 meter. Three Carols for Organ, Paul Laubengayer, Hope Publishing Co. HP 1945, 2018. This is a collection of three carols well known to United Methodists: In Dulci Jubilo; The Friendly Beasts; and Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella. The arrangements use some non-traditional harmonies and some improvisations around the familiar melody line. The Heart and Soul of Christmas, Vol. 2, Marianne Kim, Lorenz Publishing Co. 70/2373L, 2022. This is a collection of twelve familiar carols associ ated with Advent, Christmas and Epiphany: First Noel, Adeste Fideles, Cantique de Noel, Sussex Carol, Noel Nouvalet, Veni Emmanuel, Es Ist Ein Ros, Glo ria, Antioch, W Zlobie Lezy, Go Tell It, and Stille Nacht. Some involve syncopated rhythms while others have jazz elements. If you are looking for a new sound to familiar tunes, you may want to consider this collection. Four Meditations for Organ, Michael Helman, Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music) 10-043. Available in print and digital download. This new collection of original music contains four quiet, creative compositions: Prayer, Morning Song, Even song, and Reflection. Each one is accessible and while two of the selections are scored for three manuals, they would be easily adapted to work on a two-manual instrument. Five Transcriptions for Organ Solo , Daniel Ficarri, E. C. Schirmer 8986. Available in print and each transcrip tion is available separately as a digital download. Ficarri is a graduate of Julliard and a talented rising star performer. Included in the collection are the Sinfonia from J. S. Bach’s Cantata 29; the slow movement, Adagio Canta bile, from the Beethoven Pathétique Sonata; the Finale (The Dargason) from Holst’s St. Paul Suite; the Nimrod variation from Elgar’s Enigma Variations; and the complete Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg (five movements). The Beethoven piece is particularly beautiful as an organ transcription. In dulci Jubilo: Nine Accessible Hymn Preludes for Advent and Christmas , David Schelat, Birnamwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers, Inc.) MSM-10-466, 2021. Seven of the nine hymn tunes are found in The United Methodist Hymnal or The Faith We Sing book so will be familiar to your congregation. All preludes are two or three pages in length and easily learned by most organists who feel comfortable reading scores with three staffs. This recent publication provides some interesting music for preludes, offertories or postludes during the Advent season, which are, most likely, different from any music you currently have in your organ library. This is a collection of nine Advent and Christmas preludes based on hymn tunes: Antioch, Consolation, Es Ist Ein Ros, Go Tell It, Nun Kom Der Heiden Heiland, Quem Pastores, St. Thomas, and W Zlobie Lezy – many found in The United Methodist Hymnal and those that are not still make excellent preludes during this season.
