Welcome To Emory & Henry University
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT EMORY & HENRY UNIVERSITY FALL 2024 Dear Friends:
Welcome to the 2024 football season at Emory & Henry University. With more than a century of excellence on the gridiron, our program stands ready to take the next step in our move to Division II. We have much to be excited about. As recently announced, Quintin Hunter has assumed the role of Interim Head Coach for the ‘24 season. Coached and mentored by Curt Newsome since 2009, Coach Hunter brings vast experience as a wide receivers coach, running backs coach, and offensive coordinator. We want to thank Coach Newsome for an incredible 10 seasons as our Head Coach. We will be recognizing Coach Newsome at a home game later in the year. Please be on the lookout for details coming soon. Last season saw continued success in our team’s second full season of South Atlantic Conference competition. Following two dominant wins to start the season, Emory & Henry took Newberry College to eight overtimes, an NCAA Division II record, prior to falling to the Wolves, 25 23. Other highlights included our win over UVA Wise in the Sixth edition of the Southwest Virginia Bowl, an overtime win over Tusculum, and a dominant win over Erskine. Emory & Henry enters the 2024 season as a full NCAA Division II member, successfully completing the three-year transitional process this July. With six home contests this fall, there are plenty of opportunities to see the Wasps play. Three home games on August 31st, September 14th, and September 21st start our season against Glenville State, Bluefield State, and Barton, respectively. The Wasps return home on October 5th to host Lenoir-Rhyne on Homecoming Weekend. On October 26th, Emory & Henry welcomes Carson-Newman to Fred Self Stadium, which offers the possibility to see peak fall foliage in our beautiful Appalachian Highlands. Finally, Emory & Henry will host the Seventh Edition of the Southwest Virginia Bowl against UVA Wise on November 9th to conclude our home contests. The Southwest Virginia Bowl will also serve as our Senior Day. If you can’t make it to our fall games, tune in on the radio all across Southwest Virginia on WEHC 90.7 FM and WISE FM and online at wehcfm.com. Gary Lester is back again this fall to bring you every snap this year. Video coverage is available through the SAC’s partnership with FloSports. Visit GoWasps.com for links to all the season’s coverage. As always, if you are visiting Emory & Henry this fall, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am excited to meet fans, supporters, and alumni from every era of our Emory & Henry football tradition. I am thrilled to be able to support all of our teams in competition this year.
Dr. A. Louise Fincher Interim President of Emory & Henry University
Yours Sincerely, Dr. Lou Fincher Interim President

The stadium was named for Coach Selfe in the spring of 2008. A video scoreboard and updated game day operations center were were added in 2009 and 2010, respectively. In 2014, the home grandstand was named in honor of former Head Coach Lou Wacker and the playing surface was dedicated as Nicewonder Field. The FieldTurf surface, first installed in 2008, was replaced in the summer of 2019.

Quintin Hunter Interim Head Football Coach Offensive Coordinator Wide Receivers James Madison, 2013 Eighth Year at E&H
Quintin Hunter is entering his first year as Interim Head Football Coach at Emory & Henry College. He is in his third year of his second stint and eighth year overall with the program. Hunter will also serve as offensive coordinator and coach the Wasps’ wide receivers. The past two years saw the Wasps average nearly 300 yards of total offense per game and 26 points per contest as they produced a pair of 5-6 records as a provisional member of NCAA Division II while growing into the nationally-contending South Atlantic Conference. E&H has seen a total of 18 All-South Atlantic Conference performers over the past two seasons, garnering a freshman of the year on both sides of the ball. Hunter rejoined the E&H staff in 2022 after spending three years as the offensive coordinator at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. During his first five years with the Wasps (2014-18), Hunter coached both the quarterbacks and the running backs. Hunter joined E&H from James Madison University where he was a three-year letterwinner on the football field for the Dukes after transferring from the University of Virginia following his freshman year. He was selected as one of 300 participants in the NCAA’s Career in Sports Forum where he attended personal development workshops in the forum’s “Coaching Track.” In addition to his work in college football, Hunter has been extensively involved in coaching, refereeing, volunteering and serving as a camp counselor with various organizations. Hunter completed his bachelor’s degree in sport management at James Madison in December of 2013. He and his wife Kalen reside in Bristol.

The Emory & Henry Athletics Fund began in 1948 as the I-HEY Fund (I Help Every Year) as a means to support the Emory & Henry University Athletics programs and its student-athletes. Donations to the Emory & Henry Athletics Fund can be received unrestricted or designated to a particular team or sport. These additional resources from friends, alumni and parents help to underwrite team travel, recruitment efforts, student scholarships, the purchase of uniforms and equipment and so much more. The following individuals and organizations supported Emory & Henry Athletics through the E&H Athletics Fund, the Tangerine Bowl Memorial Endowment, and the University’s 28 varsity teams during the 2023-24 fiscal year:

Emory & Henry History & Traditions
Hail Emory!
Only one college in the United States uses Wasps as its nickname. If not for Knoxville newspaper writers, an Emory & Henry coach’s penchant for bounding exercises and a switch to Whitetoppers, research shows E&H might be one of more than 30 colleges in the country with the nickname Wildcats. For nearly 100 years – since 1921 – Emory & Henry’s sports teams have been known as the Wasps. Emory’s football team traveled by train to Knoxville, taking on the University of Tennessee, on September 24, 1921. That game is remembered for two events in college football history, the first being that the Vols faced the E&H in the first-ever game on Shields-Watkins Field (now Neyland Stadium). In the game, the heavily-favored Volunteers managed only a 6-0 halftime lead, mainly due to a ferocious E&H defensive unit. Knoxville newspaper writers tagged Emory & Henry as the Wasps as its defense looked like Wasps swarming on defense and covering the ball, wearing their blue-gold striped socks, blue-gold striped jerseys with stripes on the chest and sleeves. While Tennessee won the game 27-0, Emory & Henry won a new moniker, one that stuck and which was officially adopted by the College - the Wasps. The nickname Wasps bumped Whitetoppers, as Emory & Henry athletic squads were known from 1920 through 1921. Named for the majestic backdrop of the nearly-century old campus, Whitetop Mountain, Virginia’s second highest peak, the athletic nickname was also adopted by the new student newspaper, the Whitetopper, which still bears the name. Both the nickname and school newspaper were named by then-Football Coach and Athletic Director T.B. “Bingo” Fullerton. If it had formed a few years earlier and used the same naming scheme, the student newspaper could be called the Jackrabbit. In use only two years – fall 1918 thru spring 1920 – the nickname probably came from Captain J.D. “Little Jack” Jackson’s calisthenics techniques for his football players. While no definitive proof exists, oral history suggests that the football players were called Jackrabbits both for their coach and for the bounding type of warm-up exercises they performed to prepare for practices and games. During his research, former Sports Information Director Nathan Graybeal uncovered evidence which strongly suggests a fourth known nickname for Emory & Henry athletic teams. “The original baseball field and football field, located where Wiley-Jackson Hall (MaWa), its parking lots and the corner of Emory United Methodist Church now stand, is listed in some documents as Wildcat Park,” Graybeal said. “A logical explanation is that the college’s mascot at the time was the Wildcats.” There is also evidence that from 1897 to 1906, a semi-pro baseball team called the Nationals played on campus. However, Graybeal says there is no evidence to lead him to believe that “Nationals” was ever a nickname for the E&H athletic teams. During that time period, there was both a varsity baseball team and the Nationals. The Nationals simply were a semi-pro team using the campus facilities - including uniforms - while playing their games during the summers. While the names have changed, the colors have stayed the same, blue and gold. Newspaper articles and yearbooks of the time refer to Emory & Henry as “the lemon and blue warriors” as far back as the 1890s. (The reference to warriors is a generic one, as no evidence shows the school ever used that nickname. Warriors during that time period was used similarly to the way “Cagers” was used for basketball during another time period). Because Emory & Henry is blue and gold, one college in the ODAC is known as the Maroons. Oral tradition holds that the train delivering college athletic uniforms around 1907 made its stops moving from Chattanooga through Knoxville to Roanoke, and that the last set of blue-and-gold uniforms on the train were delivered to Emory & Henry. Another set was supposed to be on the train, but was not, leaving only maroon uniforms by the time the train reached Roanoke. Roanoke College took delivery of the maroon jerseys, even though the college’s school colors were officially blue and gold. This train delivery of Maroon uniforms gave birth to Roanoke’s nickname “Maroons.” Roanoke College still uses blue and gold as its official academic colors. “I love the fact that we’re unique,” said Graybeal. “No one else in the country uses Wasps, and with our tradition of sports excellence, it’s great to have a unique name to have other institutions and media outlets to use.” Why Are We The Wasps?
Across the hills of old Virgina There comes a melody divine;
It fills our hearts with eager longing, And sweetest mem’ries there entwine. It brings the thought of Alma Mater, And friends, we love so true. So now we’re singing voices ringing, Love we’re bringing you. CHORUS Hail Em’ry! Hail Em’ry! Hail Blue and Gold! True as of old! Hail Em’ry! Hail Em’ry! Hail to old E. H. C.!
We love the name of dear old Em’ry, Her classic hills and campus green. Her stately halls they are the fairest, That mortal eyes have ever seen. We pledge our loyalty forever, And faithful ever be. So now sincerely love so dearly, Dear old E. H. C. CHORUS
