Catholic Campus Ministries Centennial

100 Years of Catholic Hokies

550 STUDENTS attend Sunday Masses at War Memorial Chapel 23-24 School Year by the Numbers

History: In 1924, the Catholic Campus Ministry at Virginia Tech was founded as a campus club under the name Newman Community with the support of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Newman Club relocated from St. Mary’s to Otey Street in 1963 when Father Paul Gallagher established the Newman House - a generous home donation from Ms. Ella Russell. Sunday Masses moved to War Memorial Chapel in 1966 where they are still offered today. For the past 100 years, CCM@VT has expanded upon the University’s moto, Ut Prosim (“That I may serve”), by revealing the role of our Master: Ut Serviam Deo (“That I may serve God”). The ministry has continued to serve hundreds of students and has become one of the largest Catholic Campus Ministries at a public university on the East Coast. Inspiring Disciples, Preparing Future Leaders What We Do: Students seeking to grow in communion with Jesus Christ are supported by the Catholic Campus Ministry at Virginia Tech. “Since I was little, I would consider myself a happy person. God gave me the grace to see the bright side o lose that childlike joy as I got older. It was in searching for that joy again that I was led back to the Lord. and in my bible study. If it wasn’t for the CCM, I would not be the person I am today, and I wouldn’t have fo

The Newman House has been home base to our ministry since it was donated by Ms. Ella Russell in 1963. It holds special memories for all of our students - whether they were a member of one of our folk groups, a bible study leader, a Sunday Supper frequenter, a volunteer for one of our service projects, a Newman Dance attendee, or a member of our Leadership Council. The house currently hosts Daily Mass, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, small group bible studies, community dinners, discernment groups, Praise and Worship nights, tailgates, and more. Students consider the Newman House a home away from home, and we aspire to maintain this place of comfort and refuge for Catholic Hokies as the ministry expands. The Great Room, which was added to the Newman House in 2002, currently acts as a multi-purpose room for all large events. The space often has to be broken down and reconfigured to accommodate all the community events the ministry offers throughout the week. We are also frequently at max capacity for Daily Masses and Sunday Suppers with no room for overflow seating except adjacent rooms. Our ministry is quickly outgrowing our current facilities. To best serve our students and carry out our mission, we need your help. In 2023, the property next door to the Newman House was listed for sale, but our ministry was unable to make a competitive offer to purchase the land due to funding limitations. As we continue to serve more students, we know that building an addition on to our current structure or acquiring another plot to expand the property is an imminent need. The St. Joseph Building Fund was established by our Knights of Columbus Council to secure the funds necessary for this future building project. If you are interested in contributing to our St. Joseph Building Fund to support the future renovation and expansion of our ministry house, please contact Margot Eller at development@catholichokie.org for more information.
