For 47 years, the Bradley Free Clinic has provided free healthcare to the Roanoke Valley’s low-income uninsured with medical, behavioral health, dental, and pharmacy services. As we have all struggled this past 18 months through COVID-19, the one constant we have had is that the Bradley Free Clinic will always be that safety net for our patients and the community. The amazing team of volunteer healthcare professionals, with our faithful donors, continues to be unwavering in their support of the Clinic and provide the critical services to keep our patients healthy. All of our healthcare services have grown dramatically over the last two years, and we continue to expand and develop new programs to meet better the changing needs of our patients and the community. We now offer programs such as a HepC Clinic, Hypertension Clinic, Diabetes Management, Women’s Health, and expanded Dental Services. These programs provide more comprehensive care and education. Dedication of the Dental Department to Cathy Ford, dds & Jim McClung, DDS

regular participant in the three-day medical/dental clinic. The MOM provided free dental services, including restorative, extractions, and dentures, to more than 1200 patients each year. Jim continued to volunteer his services to the “Mini-MOMS (Mission of Mercy) coordinated by the Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke in much the same way. We are dedicating the Ford and McClung Dental Department to Cathy and Jim for their long-standing dedication and commitment to the Bradley Free Clinic.

Cathy and Jim moved to Roanoke from New Orleans in 1980 after completing their training in general dentistry and oral/ maxillofacial surgery, respectively. Cathy opened her general dentistry practice in Rocky Mount, VA, shortly after that and maintained it for 26 years before retiring in 2006. Along the way, Cathy found time to assist with fundraising for various organizations in the Roanoke Valley, including the Bradley Free Clinic. In addition, she proctored the VCU dental students at the Clinic from time to time. Cathy also served on the Board of Directors for Family Service of Roanoke Valley. She frequently provided free dental services for the indigent in her private practice, including the needy Ferrum College students. Jim entered the private practice of oral & maxillofacial surgery in 1980 and treated numerous Bradley Free Clinic patients in his office over the ensuing 33 years. After he retired from private practice in 2013, he began volunteering at the Clinic, soon establishing a “Tuesday morning” extraction Clinic. He also proctored VCU dental students regularly. When the Mission of Mercy (MOM) project came to Wise County, where he grew up, Jim quickly volunteered and became a

William & margaret Robertson Family

The Bradley Free Clinic has been a passion of both Willie and Margaret Robertson for many years. They have always been the first to step up to the plate. They were introduced to the Clinic through their son Will’s involvement as a patient screener in the mid-’80s at the St. Mark’s location. He completed a hands-on independent study for Wake Forest University updating the screener’s manual during this time. After this, Willie volunteered behind the scenes when the clinic moved to its current location with Margaret’s encouragement. Willie and a group of Rotarians helped maintain landscaping by getting his hands in the dirt, his favorite pastime. In the winters, the Clinic would need snow removal, and whenever Estelle, the former director, would call Willie, he would arrange to have it take care of. Willie and Margaret developed a tremendous amount of respect for the charity work being done at the Clinic and a great admiration for Estelle. Unfortunately, Willie passed away in February of 2019, and sadly Margaret passed away two weeks ago, on September 5th. So here with us today is their son, Will Robertson, and his wife Shari and their daughter, Virginia Summerell, and her husband JJ.

Willie and Margaret’s desire has always been to help others in need. Margaret wanted to continue to support projects at the Clinic, so with funds from the Robertson Family Fund managed by the Community Foundation of Southwest Virginia, they made a legacy donation. Their legacy donation is the catalyst that will help the Clinic build a new behavioral health wing. This expansion will provide much-needed space for psychiatry and counseling services for the underserved in our community. The new wing, the new hope, will be called the Robertson Behavioral Health Wing.

Lifetime Achievement Award Randall r. Rhea, md

Dr. Randall R. Rhea, “Randy,” is a proud native of Lewisburg, Tennessee. He received his BS degree from his beloved Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, in 1977 when he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Rhea received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in 1981. His internship with Roanoke Memorial Hospitals brought him to Roanoke in 1981, where he has lived ever since and has become a vibrant part of his adopted hometown. His residency in Family Medicine was also completed at RMH in 1984. After that, Dr. Rhea joined Parkway Physicians in Vinton, now Carilion Family Medicine, a vibrant practice in which he has served as the lead physician’s role. As a lifelong teacher and learner, Dr. Rhea has also served as a clinical preceptor with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine since its inception in 2010, a Family Medicine LACE Preceptor, and he continues to be involved with the medical students’ involvement with the Bradley Free Clinic in innumerable ways. While we all know him as the Board President of the Free Clinic, Dr. Rhea has also been involved in other community boards and activities. He has served on the boards of the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, the Presbyterian Community Center, the advisory board of CHIP, the Community Health Assessment Team,

Healthy Roanoke Valley Project Team, and the Service and Outreach Committee of Second Presbyterian Church. Dr. Rhea was also honored to serve as a member of his alma mater’s Board of Trustees for numerous terms, beginning in 1999. He served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Rhodes College from 2006-2008. In 2016, Dr. Rhea received the distinguished Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. The award is presented annually to two graduating seniors and one alumnus who have given selflessly to others and the college. They are selected for the excellence of character and service to humanity. Dr. Rhea has also been honored by other organizations, including being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club, receiving the Unsung Hero – Physician Award by the Virginia Healthcare Foundation, and being named the Volunteer Physician of the Year by the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians. We are proud to be to honor Dr. Randall R. Rhea with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Fund a need: Robertson Behavioral health winG

Fund a Need – A New Hope A New Wing Bradley’s behavioral health program has grown by over 300% in the last two years. We had 40 patients in 2019 and now treat 400+ in Fall 2021. In addition, we provide services annually to another 350 new clients through the HOPE Initiative. HOPE clients are supported by Peer Recovery Specialists navigating patients into treatment and recovery programs throughout the area. The total number of patients expected by the end of 2021 will be between 800 and 900. In the fall of 2019, we launched our fundraising efforts to build a new behavioral health wing, which will include six new counseling rooms, two group counseling rooms and much needed behavioral health work space. By April of 2021, we raised $751,000, the expected cost of the addition. Bids came in July 2021, with a price tag of close to one million to construct our new wing. Our talented team from Interactive Design Group and Lionberger Construction are working with us to make this a reality. To those who have already given, Thank You! Dr. Richard JoachimMemorial Plaque

Dr. Richard Joachim began volunteering at the Bradley Free Clinic in 1982. Dr. Joachim has been devoted to the clinic as a volunteer dentist and a member of the board of directors. In addition, he served as the volunteer Dental Director for 15 years. His commitment to serving our patients and dedication to mentoring the VCU dental students went above and beyond. Dr. Richard Joachim advocated for Bradley’s services and the value of volunteering in his well-known style, genuine and matter-of-fact. He often said, “You will be giving back to the community what you do best, and there is a good chance you will gain as much edification yourself as you are giving in your professional time.” We all certainly miss him!

The memorial plaque will be displayed in the center of the Dental Department.
