Began offering the Medication Assistance Program to anyone in the community needing assistance with obtaining prescriptions, insured or uninsured.

After extensive interior renovations, the clinic relocated to 450 West Monroe Street. The building was purchased with a grant from the Wythe-Bland Foundation, allowing for funds to be allocated to services instead of lease payments.

Relocated to the Edgemont Center, staffed by part time employees, with clinic hours during the day. *More accessible for patients

Brock Hughes Free Clinic begins at the Wythe County Health Department.

Began doing business as Brock Hughes Medical Center (BHMC).

Relocated to the leased Pine Street location.

Began offering monthly wellness classes and the Medical Transportation Program for the Wythe-Bland communities. Completed “Project Raise the Roof” renovations. 2022

Medicaid expanded in Virginia and BHMC became a hybrid clinic, providing services to patients of all ages who are uninsured or insured with Medicaid or Medicare. *Some commercial insurances accepted 2019

Began offering lab services onsite, Covid testing and treatment, and Chronic Care Management program. A partnership with Bland Ministry Center made it possible for BHMC patients to have access to dental services in the same building.

Began offering women’s health exams and VHSL sports physicals. Kicked off the “Raise the Roof” campaign to raise funds for a new roof and parking lot.

BHMC began offering primary healthcare services to children under 18.

Dear Friend, Serving Wythe and Bland counties since 1995, BHMC began as a “free clinic.” Today BHMC is known as a hybrid/expanded clinic, serving patients of all ages who are without health insurance, have Medicaid, Medicare or commercial insurance. BHMC provides acute, chronic and preventive care as well as services for the community as a whole. While the clinic model changed, clinic services expanded and BHMC strengthened its delivery of services during the last few years, it has remained true to its Mission. Operating as a nonprofit since 2004, BHMC relies on grants, donations and fundraising in order to continue providing program services to this vulnerable population in our community. ME E T Ms. Stoots

A long-time employee in the service industry and a hard worker to boot, Wendy Stoots found herself without health insurance options because her employers did not offer these benefits. She was unable to afford the high premium costs associated with health insurance, but also earned too much

Monitoring System. The cost of a Continuous Glucose Monitoring system to help her monitor her blood sugar while at work would have been more than she could afford on her income. However, as part of the Chronic Care Management (CCM) program at BHMC, Ms. Stoots was supplied with a Continuous Glucose Monitoring system beginning in June of 2022. Since beginning to use the system and meeting with the pharmacist approximately once every other week, Ms. Stoots’ average blood glucose has improved from approximately 209 to 158, according to the most recent readings. The system alerts Ms. Stoots when her blood sugar level is dropping while at work so that she can immediately have a snack to raise the level before it becomes dangerously low, which would then affect her being able to work. Ms. Stoots has also seen improvements in her blood pressure during her participation in the program. The CCM program has been funded in-part by the Wythe-Bland Foundation since 2020. This program is significantly improving the health outcomes of other BHMC patients diagnosed with chronic diseases, like Ms. Stoots. Ms. Stoots is grateful the clinic has been here for her for so long. Without BHMC, her options for primary healthcare and pharmacy services through the years would have been slim to none. to qualify for Medicaid. Her only option in the mid-1990s was to turn to the then Brock Hughes Free Clinic which was located in the Wythe County Health Department. In 1996, Ms. Stoots was diagnosed with diabetes. Ms. Stoots began participating with Keri Sword, PharmD, in the BHMC Chronic Care Management program more than two years ago. At that time, the program was a new addition to the services provided by BHMC. In addition to being a diabetic, Ms. Stoots has trouble maintaining her blood sugar levels in the optimal range, experiencing periodic hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) episodes, which can be very dangerous. These episodes threatened her ability to continue her work. Ms. Stoots needed some way to monitor her blood sugar levels more consistently while working while also not disrupting her workflow. Dr. Sword recommended that she try a Continuous Blood Glucose

J E R R Y H U R T T he The BHMC golf tournament is named for the late Jerry Hurt who was serving as treasurer of the Brock Hughes Medical Center at the time of his untimely death in 2018. Jerry Hurt was a pillar in our community. He graduated from Rural Retreat High School, Wytheville Community College, Virginia Tech, and received his MBA from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies (WVU). He began his professional career with the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, which later became Elkem Metals USA, where he served as president. Later, Jerry specialized in the development and diversification of numerous small business ventures. He Jerry and his family

retired from Starck Van Lines (Pittsburgh) in 2014 after serving as CEO. Upon retirement, Jerry and his wife Phyllis returned to the town they loved, Rural Retreat, VA, and the extended family they treasured. Jerry contributed an enormous amount of his time, talents and money to churches, this community, foundations, boards, civic organizations and individuals throughout Wythe County. A successful businessman, he led with intelligence and kindness, garnering respect along the way. Hurt was very passionate in his work at BHMC. He believed that a golf tournament was just what BHMC needed as a “signature” fundraiser, an event that would be recognizable to the community every year. Executive Director Stacey Linkous, along with several board members, ensured that Jerry’s vision became a reality in 2019. The Hurt Family has supported the tournament since its’ inaugural year.

BHMC was very fortunate to have Jerry. His vision for BHMC has been fulfilled; the Jerry Hurt Memorial Golf Tournament has become a very special community event each August. It’s a time to celebrate the life of Jerry and support BHMC.

G I V I N G T R E E The “Giving Tree” is located on the wall in the patient waiting room. A leaf can be purchased and a plate will be engraved with the donor’s chosen wording.
