Barter Theatre is committed to fostering the development of new theatrical works that tell the story of our region. Our New Play Development Program includes festivals for both students and professionals. For the last 20 years, the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights (our flagship play development program) has produced works that go on to be published and produced on Barter stages and beyond.

You are opening doors to spaces in which all Appalachians can come together and appreciate our differences safely and with mutual respect. • The Black in Appalachia Initiative celebrates the voices of Black playwrights, other Black theatre artists, and members of the Black community. • BIAI seeks out and presents a play written by a Black Appalachian playwright at each Appalachian Festival of Plays & Playwrights and holds an evening of monologues written by Black playwrights across the country based on stories shared from Black Appalachian communities.

In 2023, Barter Theatre estimates the Barter Players will tour about 35+ schools and venues in this region, and about 21,000 students will attend plays at Gilliam and Smith stage. For many, this will be the only experience of the arts they will have for the entire year.
