Barter Theatre
B arter Theatre relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations to support our exceptional artistic productions and educational and outreach effort. Ticket sales and other production fees account for almost two-thirds of Barter’s revenues, with vital donations making the difference. Nearly ninety-five cents of every dollar raised goes directly to Barter Programming. Please help us continue our legacy of artistic excellence!

Artistic Excellence B arter Theatre continues to develop talent and new works through its Young Playwrights Festival which engages high school students, College Playwrights Festival, and Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights which celebrates the region’s culture.
D esignated the State Theatre of Virginia in 1946, Barter Theatre is the oldest year-round full-time professional repertory theatre in the nation. Each year, Barter Theatre presents over 20 productions; employs over 300 full- time, part-time, seasonal, and freelance personnel; and has a total economic impact of over $34 million on the region’s economy. Barter’s Legacy T he concept of exchanging “Ham for Hamlet” was an overnight success and Barter Theatre established a reputation for providing performances of the highest artistic quality. Today, at least three performances a year celebrate Barter’s heritage by accepting donations of canned goods as the price of admission, with over 5,000 pounds donated annually to an area food bank.

Barter’s rich history toward developing talent and artistry has truly resulted in a unique training ground for actors.
Access to the Arts A s the only regional theatre located outside of a major urban metropolitan area, Barter Theatre is committed to making its productions accessible for everyone. Our student matinee program offers economically disadvantaged children free admission to performances and the first performance of every production is “pay as you can.”
Inclusion
I n an effort to be more inclusive, Barter offers special sensory performances of Barter Player productions, open captioning at select performances, and provides hearing assistance for all patrons.
Behind the Scenes B arter’s on-stage quality begins with the talent of its production staff working outside the performance venue weeks or months in advance of opening night. Interesting fact, for every one actor on stage, eight to ten talented people are required behind the scenes.
