If We Could Fly Away By Megan Asbrand
We love with our bodies in a criminal, chemical way we cannot sweat out of our pores, cannot let out any more of ourselves or else no ounce of me will remain in the dark, damp pit of my stomach where it belongs. I need it to anchor me, tie the tangles of my intestines to this fire hydrant or else I will float away and take you with me, but some nights I do not think this would be such a bad thing. The whole town will wave as we wander up and away, and we will be legends, and they will tell their children about us, about the moment they saw the last of our toes to the tune of the streetlights’ laughter and realized we were never one of them anyway. And we will love with the weight of the whole world behind us because there is nobody on the moon to tell us we cannot.
