THEILERIA IN CATTLE Scott P. Greiner, Extension Beef Specialist, Virginia Tech Department of Animal & Poultry Sciences John Currin, Extension Veterinarian, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine

Theileriosis is an infectious disease of cattle caused by the blood parasite Theileria. Clinical signs are similar to anaplasmosis and include anemia, fever, and lethargy. Most clinical cases are occurring September-November and April-June but can be year-round. Theileria is found around the world, but is an emerging disease as it was first diagnosed in Virginia in early fall 2017. Similar to anaplasmosis, animals have acute disease and are persistently infected. Carrier animals are possible, and chronically infected animals may harbor Theileria, which can be a source of infection in herds. Ticks are important to transmission of Theileria, including the newly introduced Asian Longhorn Tick. Some important notes regarding Theileria as it relates to the bulls in the 2020 Southwest Bull Test Sale: • In recent weeks, testing has confirmed that Theileria is rapidly spreading throughout the state (and in Southwest Virginia). Given the difficulty of controlling known vectors (ticks), and without a treatment, it is nearly impossible to stop. • Little is known about the epidemiology of this emerging disease, although it has been present in other countries around the world for several years with very little economic impact. • Current evidence suggests that in healthy cattle, morbidity and mortality rates are very low (sickness tends to occur in immune- compromised animals) • A blood test for Theileria is available, and is the only definitive way to check for the presence of Theileria in a herd or population • The test station bulls were tested on 3/3/20. Based on these results, the herd can be considered infected with Theileria. No bulls have shown symptoms associated with Theileria. Further analysis of samples confirm no bulls have anemia based on Packed Cell Volume (an objective diagnostic measure of anemia) • As more testing is being done, more Theileria is being identified in herds without previous clinical signs. • Given the rate at which Theileria is spreading in the region, we believe these circumstances confirm the fact that Theileria may be widespread, and also are testimony to the fact that Theileria’s impact on healthy cattle is likely to be minimal. There are a few naïve herds that may have a 5-10% death loss in the early stages of the disease. • As a precaution, all cattle in the sale have been recently poured with a pyrethroid for parasite control (tick control in particular). • Visit with your veterinarian if you have additional questions regarding Theileria.
