Weight $ The visual effect of the thickness or thinness of text, graphics, illustrations or photographs on a page. Essentially, items that have greater visual density such as bold text, dark images, tighter proximity, etc. are identi fied as having greater weight than similar elements that exhibit finer details, lighter colors and increased white space. White Space $ Empty space on a page deliberately integrated to emphasize graphics or text, consequently affording a visual interlude between the information that graphic elements are conveying to the reader. Widow $ A single word or very short line of text at the end of a paragraph, especially at the bottom of a page. Word spacing $ The amount of space between words. X-height $ The height of the lowercase letters, typically exemplified by the letter x.
