After graduating from high school in 1975, I attended Radford University and majored in elementary education. I graduated in 1979, and stayed in Radford teaching first grade in Rich Creek, Virginia. I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina the following August and began teaching in Fort Mill, South Carolina. I earned my Master ’ s degree in elementary education from Winthrop University in 1990. After my first grandchild was born, I retired from teaching after 39 years. During that time, I taught kindergarten, and was also a reading and math specialist. I was honored as a Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, I loved the wonderful relationships that I made with my students and their families and fellow teachers. In 1989 I married Bruce Basen and gave birth to two children, Shane, 1991 and Alyssa, 1993. After playing collegiate baseball, Shane graduated from UNCC and has been working as a CPA at Deloitte. Alyssa cheered and attended Wake Forest University and is currently a Physician Assistant at a pediatrician office in Winston - Salem. Both children are married and have three children each. I am keeping busy spending time and making memories with my adorable grandchildren. Since retirement, I keep busy baking, decorating sugar cookies, making greeting cards, going to Jazzercize and spending time with friends and family. Bruce and I have been fortunate to travel to Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Switzer land, South Africa, Croatia and Slovenia.
