Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

2025 NATIONAL PRESIDENT REBECCA LANE

Before the 2024 Summer Leadership conference began, some people were forced to go outside their comfort zone as nametags were placed at individual seats and attendees were asked to find their nametag and sit at the assigned seat, separating them from their friends. Guess what, everyone survived! I shared a story at the conference about stepping outside my comfort zone and several attendees came up later and asked how it was accomplished. Here is my story.

I am one of four children - my oldest sister, the brains, my other sister, the beauty (and adventurous one), and my brother, the only boy and athletic, so the brawn. So, we have the brains, beauty and brawn and then there is me. I was able to hide behind my siblings as they all had at least one outstanding quality. I didn’t have to leave my comfort zone; I had siblings to do that. When I was 19 or 20, one of my roommates decided she wanted to learn to parachute. I jumped at the chance because my adventurous sister had not done that, and I could finally beat her at something. Don’t get me wrong, if there hadn’t been a really cute guy on the plane also jumping, I would have backed out. The jump was exhilarating but I wasn’t doing it for myself, I was doing it to beat my sister (and to catch the eye of the cute guy). When I let my family know what I had done, I found out my sister had already parachuted from a plane, I was deflated. But looking back at that jump, I realize that my passion for beating my sister allowed me to briefly go outside my comfort zone. A few years later I married a wonderful man. He allowed me to literally and figuratively hide behind him. He was the powerhouse, everyone knew him. I was his shadow. And it worked well for us. I stayed in the background where I was most comfortable. After almost 24 years, he unexpectedly passed away. I sold his law firm to the firm I started with in the beginning of my career and continued doing the same thing I was familiar with. After a year, circumstances changed, and I left the work force. My husband knew I wanted to go to the Amazon, and he looked for ways to get us there but unfortunately, with him confined to a wheelchair (he was a paraplegic) the trip was not something we could do together. So, for what would have been our 25 th wedding anniversary I decided I would go to the Amazon to honor him. This was my biggest aha moment. I flew by myself to Peru where I met up with the National Geographic representative. It was a fantastic trip, and I didn’t want it to end. But most importantly, I learned I could push myself out of my comfort zone for something I truly wanted to do. I later was asked to join the Ruritans. I did because I enjoyed the fellowship and the service we were able to provide for the community. While I was president, I attended zone meetings and became friends with the zone governor. She asked me to become her lieutenant the following year. With a zone position I started attending the District meetings. A few years later I was asked to step up to Lt. District Governor. This took quite a bit of persuading as this was again outside my comfort zone. The club and zone were small but the District? Yikes!! In the end I accepted the position as I had support from my Ruritan family, who believed in me, even if I didn’t believe in myself. I grew more confident in my abilities and my comfort zone increased. At the urging of several of my Ruritan family members I ran for National Director, forcing myself again outside my comfort zone. With each meeting I attended, I became more comfortable.

3

During my final year as Director, I was approached about running for President-Elect. Woah! That would mean traveling, speaking and eventually leading 20,000+ members. Talk about outside my comfort zone! It took me a few months and lots of praying before I said yes. Lessons learned during my journey: 1. Set Clear Goals: Identify specific areas where you want to grow and set achievable targets. 2. Start Small: Begin with manageable challenges and gradually take on more difficult ones. 3. Seek New Experiences: Try activities, hobbies, or tasks that you haven’t done before. 4. Face Your Fears: Identify what scares you and confront those fears step by step. 5. Learn Continuously: Enroll in courses, read books, or attend workshops to acquire new knowledge and skills. 6. Embrace Discomfort: Acknowledge that discomfort is a part of growth and use it as a sign you’re on the right path. 7. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your efforts to grow. 8. Reflect on Progress: Regularly assess your experiences and growth and celebrate your achievements. 9. Stay Positive: Maintain a positive mindset and remind yourself of the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone. 10. Be Persistent: Keep pushing yourself even when it feels challenging, as consistency leads to improvement. As Roy T. Bennett wisely said, “It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.”Through my own journey, I have seen firsthand how stepping beyond familiar boundaries brings growth and strength. I am confident that Ruritan will emerge stronger and more vibrant as we embrace change. When we challenge ourselves and take bold steps forward, we unlock new opportunities and realize our fullest potential.

We are proud to report that since October 1, 2024, Project FOCUS has awarded $85,500.00 in grants. Who oversees Project FOCUS? The Ruritan National Board of Directors has a committee that reviews grant requests and commits dollars to where they are needed. They are also charged with developing ways to raise funds for the program. Who are the current members of Project FOCUS, and how long do they serve? Project FOCUS committee members serve one-year terms as voted on by the current National Board of Directors. Our current board members are:  President: Lynn Fillers  Vice President: Julie Marshall  Secretary: Jeff Roadcap

 Treasurer: Debi Davis  Director: Brian Grove  Ruritan National Support: Kory Wirt

Who can apply for assistance through Project FOCUS? Any club or district can apply for grant monies by completing and submitting a grant application form (found on the Ruritan.org web page under forms) Where does the money come from? Funding for Project FOCUS comes from donations from individuals, clubs, districts, and businesses. Donations to FOCUS may potentially be tax deductible. What is the application process? Here is an approximate timeline for applications submitted to Project FOCUS:  A local club or district completes an application for assistance within their area.

 The National Office receives the application via email, the USPS (may take up to 1 week or longer depending on the mail service), or fax to the National Office. When submitting your application, please be sure to submit your approved club or district minutes indicating the approved motion for assistance . * If submitting by email- please include the Zone Governor, District Governor, and National Representative for your district.  The National Office will acknowledge receipt of the grant request to the designated point of contact, the Zone Governor, the District Governor, and the National Representative assigned to that district. The distribution timeline will begin with this email.  Application is shared with the current committee and reviewed for accuracy and scope of request- any requests that are incomplete or require additional information will be reviewed with the designated point of contact of the grant request or returned for clarification. (1 week)  The current committee votes on completed grant requests, and a grant amount is assigned, or the application is returned to the designated point of contact with an explanation for the application being turned down. The Grant Response Notification will also be emailed to the Zone Governor, District Governor, and National Representative. (2 days)  Grant amounts are distributed and sent to the designated point of contact. (2 days)  The designated point of contact is responsible for completing a Grant Completion Form indicating how the grant was (or is being) used to meet the needs of the local community during their time of need (may take up to 1 month after the funds are distributed to the designated point of contact). If the distribution of funds exceeds the one-month timeline, a progress report shall be submitted and updated monthly until the distribution is complete . How much money can be given for a grant application? The grant amount would be based on the need and the number of grants being considered at that time, subject to available funds within Project FOCUS not exceeding $10,000 per event request. When should we request a grant? The club and/or district should begin the grant process as soon as a need has been recognized and a reasonable estimate of a grant amount has been determined. How can my club and club members, as well as our district, get involved? There are many ways to get involved with Project FOCUS: • Follow us on social media- Ruritan National Project FOCUS. • Encourage your club to make a planned annual gift to Project FOCUS. • Have club members check with their employers to see if they offer matching gift programs. • Be a boots-on-the-ground volunteer in your area- YOU ARE THE HANDS, FEET, and HEART of RURITAN!
