Bluefield State University at Emory & Henry University September 14, 2024 • 1:00 p.m. • Fred Selfe Stadium Today’s Game
21
Today’s Matchup Welcome to Fred Selfe Stadium on the campus of Emory & Henry University for today’s game as E&H hosts Bluefield State University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. This is the second of three straight home games to open the season for the Wasps. E&H will also host Barton College next Saturday before visiting Limestone University on September 28. About The Teams Emory & Henry comes into today’s game with a 1-0 record. Bluefield State is 1-1 on the year. E&H beat Glenville State University by a 38-7 margin on August 31. The Wasps scored 17 points in the opening period against the Pioneers and added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter for a 31-0 lead. After a GSU score late in the third, Emory & Henry found the end zone to open the fourth for a 38-7 lead. The game was halted by lightning and ultimately called after a one hour, 12 minute delay, giving the Wasps the victory. The Big Blue suffered a 34-3 loss to Winston-Salem State University to start the season but bounced back with a 22-13 victory at Concord University a week ago. In last Saturday’s win against the Mountain Lions, the Big Blue found itself down 7-0 after one quarter but stormed ahead in the second with 16 points for a 16-10 halftime advantage. The squads only scored with field goals in the second half with Bluefield State getting two and Concord one for the 22-13 final score. The Rivalry Emory & Henry and Bluefield State meet for the seventh time in program history today. It is the second straight year that the Wasps and Big Blue have faced one another on the gridiron following a 47 year hiatus after the first five games (1972-76). E&H holds a 5-1 advantage in the series having won five in a row after dropping the initial contest in 1972. Last season, the Wasps picked up a 37-14 win in Bluefield. About Bluefield State Bluefield State is under the direction of first-year Head Coach Davon Morgan, who is a 2010 graduate of Virginia Tech. He has a 1-1 record in his young career as a head coach. Morgan makes his return to Southwest Virginia, having served as an assistant coach on Curt Newsome’s staff in the 2021 season when he worked with the wide receivers. Christian Solino runs the Big Blue’s offense having thrown for 389 yards and one touchdown on 35-for-52 passing through two games. Aidan Lee has rushed for 88 yards while Ramon Brown is second on the squad with 58 yards. Thomas Lee paces the Bluefield State corps of wide receivers with 10 catches for 146 yards while Zuriel Ebron has six catches for 85 yards and the Big Blue’s only offensive touchdown so far.
Defensively, Jahman McNeil has made 13 stops to lead BSU while Marcus Young has 12 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Nolan Meehleib is third on the squad with 11 tackles. Danny Dales has provided more than half of the Big Blue’s scoring so far this year, accounting for four field goals and an extra point. His season long is 34 yards. About Emory & Henry Emory & Henry is led by Interim Head Coach Quintin Hunter, James Madison University class of 2013. Hunter is in the third season of his second stint with the Wasps and eighth overall, having previously coached at E&H from 2014-18. He holds a 1-0 record as head coach. Quarterback Charles Mutter, III went 7-for-17 though the air for two touchdowns in Emory & Henry’s season opener. He linked up with four different receivers including a pair of touchdown passes to Cam Peoples who finished with three catches for 83 yards. Jakari Mozelle had two receptions for 23 yards while Cam Abshire caught one pass for 21 yards. Jordan Jackson rushed for 89 yards in his E&H debut, scoring the Wasps’ first touchdown of the season. Mutter has 25 yards on the ground. Defensively, Jacob Robinson leads the way with seven tackles and an interception while Marc Harris made six stops and recovered a fumble in his first game wearing blue-and-gold. Addison Knicely made five stops with one interception while Ean Rhea had an interception that he returned for a touchdown. Trace Butcher is 5-for-5 on extra points and made a 37-yard field goal last week. Wally Venter is averaging 36.8 yards per punt and has allowed just one return. Notes of Interest Emory & Henry has been picked to finish 10th in the South Atlantic Conference this season and fourth in the Mountain Division. Lenoir Rhyne University, last year’s conference champion and National Semifinalist is favored to retain its crown while Wingate has been chosen second.
