It is important that all Ruritan leaders and Ruritan club members observe the Ruritan policy on harassment as they conduct their day-to-day dealings with each other and the general public. Ruritan is committed to providing an environment that is free of discrimination and unlawful harassment. Actions, words, jokes, or comments based on an individual’s sex, race, national origin or ethnicity, age, weight, disability, religion or any other legally protected characteristic will not be tolerated. As an example, sexual harassment (both overt and subtle) is a form of misconduct that is demeaning to another person, undermines the integrity of the organization, and is strictly prohibited. Sexual harassment specifically occurs when supervisors, co-workers, or Ruritan volunteers: make unwelcome advances, make abusive physical contact, make repeated comments or gestures of a sexual nature, or create a hostile or intimidating environment. All persons intending to run as a candidate for a Ruritan National Officer, National Board of Directors, and National Foundation Trustee must send a letter of official notification to: Michael Chrisley, Executive Director, P.O. Box 487, Dublin, VA 24084 or execdir@ruritan. org. After receiving this official notification, the Ruritan National Office will forward the candidate a packet of candidate material including a biographical information form, which must be completed and returned to the Ruritan National Office along with a photograph (color or black and white). A candidate for Ruritan National Officer, National Director, or National Foundation Trustee may have his/her biographical information printed in only one regular issue of the RURITAN magazine each year: 1. This policy does not intend to: discourage invitations to social events, discourage appropriate comments on personal appearance, or discourage innocent activities. Employees and volunteers are expected to use good judgement and to avoid even the appearance of sexual impropriety in all interactions with employees and volunteers. Inappropriate actions reflect on Ruritan as a whole. Employees or volunteers should report inappropriate actions to the Executive Director or the National President. Ruritan will take appropriate action to resolve the matter upon investigation of the action or incident. Ruritan prohibits retaliation against any person who claims harassment. This policy applies to: employees of Ruritan National, Officers of Ruritan National, Directors of Ruritan National, Trustees of the Ruritan National Foundation, District Cabinet members, and all other volunteer leaders including those at the district, zone, and club level. Ruritan National Office postmarked no later than July 1 2. In the winter issue of RURITAN if the envelope containing the information is received by the Ruritan National Office postmarked no later than October 1. All candidates will be featured in the Ruritan National Convention Program provided their information arrives at the Ruritan National Office prior to the printing of that program (approximately November 15). NOTE: Candidates cannot serve on Ruritan National Convention committees.
