2022-2023 Independence Middle School Handbook
PROCEDURES FOR ASSIGNING HOMEWORK Grayson County Public Schools supports research-based equitable homework practices that allow students to practice, prepare, study and/or extend learning. Homework will be clearly communicated to students and parents/guardians and should be appropriate for the age and stage of development of the student. Guidelines: The following guidelines are intended to support principals, teachers, parent/guardians, and students in developing a common understanding of homework expectations. *Home work assignments will be limited to Monday through Thursday only — No Friday or weekend assignment packets. Long term assignments or projects will not be due for submission on the day school resumes after a break including three-day weekends at any grade level. *Home work assignments should be limited to 15 minutes for each subject/class nightly, (ex. 5-8 questions/problems in reading/math). It is important to be mindful that students have multiple subjects and classes. Class periods should allow for completion of assignments with minimal homework being required. Additional notes *Teachers should refrain from utilizing timed tests or quizzes that result in penalizing the grade of students.
*Routinely check for student understanding before progressing to new material.
*Be mindful of Extra-Curricular Schedules and school related activities to avoid penalizing students for attending school related activities and events.
