2020 Convention
2020-R.4 Sudan Resolution 2020 Submitted by Richard J. Jones, Emeritus Professor of Mission, Virginia Theological Seminary
WHEREAS, the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia and the Diocese of Leeds in the Church of England are in companion relationship with each other, and WHEREAS, each has had relationships with dioceses in Sudan; Leeds in current relationship with the Episcopal Church of Sudan and Southwestern Virginia with Episcopal Church of South Sudan in the past, and WHEREAS, during the past three decades of civil war and tribal violence in Sudan have been faithful companions; and WHEREAS, Christian citizens in both Sudans have acted boldly during the past six years against oppression and for reconciliation between groups in their respective societies; and WHEREAS, the Sudanese congregation of St. James’s, Roanoke seeks to use its influence for reconciliation in their homelands; therefore, be it RESOLVED, that this Convention prays in remembrance with thanks to God for Bishop Nicholas Baines, Archbishop Ezekiel Kondo, Archbishop Joseph Badi Arama, and their people as instruments of his peace with justice on earth; and be it further RESOVED, that this pledge be communicated to these three dioceses respectively.
