The Tenth Annual Global Entrepreneur Partnership, hosted by Outreach and International Affairs, Virginia Tech, and VT KnowledgeWorks, offers university students and faculty from all over the world a chance to collaborate, form partnerships, and build their global networks in Virginia. Members of the global partnership gather annually to celebrate student entrepreneurship where elite university teams present their business concepts and compete on a world stage for $45,000 in cash prizes. While in Blacksburg, teams are housedwith local families, spend interactive time with successful technology companies, enjoy fellowship with Virginia Tech students, and attend several celebrations. Faculty and staff delegates charged with building institutional bridges to other universities around the globe gather to discuss entrepreneurship programs, including best practices, innovations, and initiatives, while experiencing university-to-university networking opportunities to help build future collaboration and partnerships. Let’s Talk Entrepreneurship Friday, August 23, 2019 Tech Center Research Park, 630 Hofstadter Road, Newport News, Virginia at 8:00 a.m.
Tech Center Research Park at Newport News and Gather are pleased to host a breakfast panel discussion, “Let’s Talk Entrepreneurship,” sponsored by Newport News Economic Development Authority and W.M. Jordan Company. Panelists will provide insights on their lessons learned and best practices in starting up, successes they have achieved along their entrepreneurial journey, and key resources available to assist entrepreneurs as they expand in the US market and globally. MODERATOR Jeff Johnson is the Director of Tech Center Research Park at Newport News, spearheading this project since 2014, and actively seeking out companies and entrepreneurs who are focused on commercializing discovery and growing businesses that matter. In 2009, Jeff founded his own consulting company, Averitas, to help small and medium-sized businesses profitably grow both nationally and internationally. Prior to that, he was Founding CEO and Executive Director of an innovative healthcare-based workforce training program for adults and an arts-based education program for high school students in Cleveland, Ohio. Jeff has more than 20 years of corporate experience and has held director and senior-level executive leadership positions with profit and loss responsibilities at global industry-leading companies. As a certified Six Sigma Champion Trainer, Jeff also holds an Executive M.B.A. from Tulane University and a B.A. in Chemistry from Virginia Tech. PANELISTS Stuart Henderson, PhD is the Director of Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Stuart Henderson has served as the Director of Jefferson Lab, a world-leader in nuclear physics research, since April 3, 2017. Jefferson Lab features the first large- scale superconducting accelerator that enables the research of more than 1,500 nuclear physicists worldwide. Prior to joining Jefferson Lab, Dr. Henderson served as the Director of the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade Project, where he led the effort to design and build a 4th-generation synchrotron light source that will produce the world’s brightest hard x-rays. Previously, he served as Associate Laboratory Director for Accelerators at Fermilab and spent nearly a decade at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), where he played key roles in constructing and commissioning the world’s most powerful accelerator-based neutron science user facility. He worked at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) from 1991 to 2001, first as a research fellow with Harvard University, and then as a Cornell research staff member. R. Roy Whitney, PhD is the President and CEO of BNNT, LLC. Dr. Whitney has worked at accelerator laboratories for over 40 years, including Stanford University’s HEPL, Berkeley Lab, Los Alamos-LAMPF, MIT-Bates, and Saclay in France and 30 years at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). His positions have included chief information officer, chief technology officer and now scientist emeritus. Dr. Whitney has chaired a number of U.S. Department of Energy multi-site networking and computing committees and has chaired multiple international scientific conferences. Dr. Whitney received his BA in physics from the University of Oregon Honors College and his PhD in nuclear physics from Stanford University. Dr. Whitney initiated BNNT, LLC, and as president & CEO. The company licensed intellectual property from NASA LaRC, National Institute of Aerospace, Jefferson Lab and Berkeley Lab, initiated operations in May 2013, scaled the BNNT synthesis process to commercial levels in March 2014, and launched sales in July 2014. To date, the company has sold and provided samples of BNNT to over 600 product developers and scientific researchers in 28 countries and is currently expanding production capabilities. Evans McMillion is the Executive Director of 757 Accelerate. Evans is passionate about solving problems through innovation and collaboration. As an attorney, she helped growing businesses rethink their options and knock down the hurdles in their path towards growth. Most of Evans’ opportunities materialized because she was willing to say “yes” and then get to work. Prior to joining 757 Accelerate, Evans worked as an attorney counseling big and small companies at all stages of growth from entity formation through IPO. She has practiced in law firms in Seattle and Virginia Beach, as well as serving as corporate counsel to ADS, Inc. Evans attended Dartmouth College and Duke University School of Law.

Karen McNew McGuire is a Senior Consultant in the department of marketing and communications at Carilion Clinic. She earned her undergraduate degree in Communication Studies from Virginia Tech and spent 20 years reporting and anchoring a variety of newscasts. Karen has received several awards including a National Capital Chesapeake Bay Emmy award for news anchoring. Most recently, she won an Award of Excellence this year from The Mid-Atlantic Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development for her content marketing work related to Carilion Clinic’s NICU services. A native of Blacksburg, Karen lives at Smith Mountain Lake with her husband Matt and their rescued Westie named Daisy.

The Virginia Tech Global Entrepreneur Challenge celebrates the energy and ingenuity of university students and their important contributions to the future of our global economy. Elite student teams from around the world will showcase their entrepreneurial ideas and compete for a Global Challenge award and $25,000 grand prize. Full-time university students who have won a significant student business concept competition in their home region will be participating in the Challenge. The finalist student teams will present their business concept presentations before a panel of business leaders as well as event attendees. Teams will compete for the chance to win one of three prizes, including the Advanced Manufacturing Award of $15,000 for the most outstanding tangible product, the $15,000 Information Technology Award for the most outstanding intangible product or service, and the $5,000 People’s Choice Award. One of the two teams that receive the Advanced Manufacturing or the Information Technology prizes will earn the grand prize and receive an additional $10,000. Panelists for the Virginia Tech Global Entrepreneur Challenge
Eva Doss has over twenty years of experience in pre-seed and seed investment fund establishment and management, fundraising, business consulting and business development both in the United States and in Europe. During her career, Eva established new business ventures and investment funds and developed strategic business partnerships internationally. In addition to The Launch Place (TLP), Eva has worked with Booz Allen, RTI International and the U.S. Agency for International Development in Washington, D.C. In 2005, Eva became the first Executive Director of the Southside Business Technology Center (SBTC), a business consulting entity. In 2012, under Eva’s leadership, the SBTC expanded its business model and became The Launch Place (TLP). The Launch Place is a lead entrepreneurial development organization offering pre-seed and seed investments to startups through its two equity funds. In addition, TLP continues to offer business consulting, training and office space and subsidies to entrepreneurs in Danville, Virginia and in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. Eva
has an MBA and B.S. in business administration, a post-graduate Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership from MIT Sloan School of Management, serves on several for profit and non-profit boards in North Carolina and Virginia and speaks several languages.
Lisa K. Garcia is an adjunct instructor for the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps program, the mission of which is to commercialize technology developed inside universities. She is also an NSF Program Manager at Virginia Tech where she works with faculty, students and administrators to empower the entrepreneurial ecosystem inside and outside the university in its role as a site for the D.C. Node of the I-Corps program. Lisa also works with both domestic and international clients to reduce the risk of commercializing technology as a consultant. Her clients include the regional business accelerator RAMP in Roanoke, Virginia and government entities such as South Korea’s Korea Innovation Center with offices in Vienna, Virginia, and Seoul, South Korea. Focused on the fuzzy front end of innovation and business development, Lisa has worked with startups and small and medium-sized enterprises to expand client companies’ business development and business intelligence, often starting with domestic work and expanding to international territories. She has worked with a variety of companies but
most recently enjoyed expanding relationships with EHS professionals for work with the Slip Simulator™ developed at Virginia Tech and commercialized by Industrial Biodynamics. Her international sales work includes work with clients in Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and several EU-member countries. Lisa’s professional experience goes beyond business development and I-Corps’ lean launch instruction. After graduating from Virginia Tech, hear early career began as a daily newspaper reporter covering crime and the courts and eight years in development work for a foundation before diving into work as both an entrepreneur and a business coach.
Todd Headley is currently an angel investor and active advisor/board member for multiple cybersecurity companies, as well as an investor in the Global Good Fund. The Global Good Fund accelerates the leadership of social entrepreneurs around the world to develop sustainable businesses. Since early 2014, Todd has been semi-retired after a 30-year career, which started at Arthur Andersen and went on to include senior financial positions at five technology startups in the Washington, D.C. area. His last full-time venture was as CFO of Sourcefire (Nasdaq: FIRE), which he helped take public in 2007 and sold to Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) for $2.7B in 2013. He enjoys being involved at Virginia Tech. He's been a big sponsor for the INNOVATE program, a member of the VT Investor Network and an executive board member for the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs. Todd is a 1985 graduate of Virginia Tech (B.S. in accounting). During his senior year, he met his wife, Julie (B.S. in finance, 1986). They currently reside near Asheville, North Carolina and have three adult children.

Tim Meyers is Managing Director of DoHoMa Capital and provides strategic advice, counsel to numerous companies including Baker Tilly, where he is a Senior Advisor. His specific focus is working closely with entrepreneurs, CXOs and their boards to accelerate growth and strategic initiatives. He provides advice on equity and debt structures, acquisitions, dispositions, strategic partnerships, new offerings, management team optimization, workouts, etc. He has worked with companies in diverse sectors including software, tech, cyber, biotech, life sciences, data analytics, private equity, professional services, manufacture, energy, industrial services, real estate, education and not-for-profit sector. Throughout his career, he has operated in various roles, including Chairman, Managing Partner, Managing Director, Partner, President, CFO and Chairman of Investment Committees. As an investor he has managed large diversified portfolios for endowments, family offices and corporate pension funds. As a principal, he has created new VC/private equity, hedge and real estate funds. He has raised billions in equity and debt.
He has led, managed and/or directly invested in over a hundred companies. As board member and management team member of many of these, he helped lead the exit planning that created tremendous liquidity for owners and investors. Tim has had the pleasure of being an instructor for multiple universities and law schools. He has also been an active board member with a number of universities, research institutes and other not-for-profit organizations. He has a master’s degree in accounting and tax from Virginia Tech and a B.S. in business from George Mason University. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for 33 years and has one daughter who is a sophomore at Virginia Tech. Mary Guy Miller is the director of the Regional Accelerator and Mentoring Program (RAMP), which identifies early stage STEM companies and provides resources to accelerate their growth across Region 2. RAMP is a joint effort of the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council, the City of Roanoke and Virginia Western Community College. Currently, RAMP is evaluating applications for the third cohort, which will begin on May 15. Before becoming the director, Mary was the founder and president of Interactive Design and Development, Inc. (IDD), an information technology firm in Blacksburg, Virginia. Under her 29 years of leadership and guidance, the company developed information technology solutions for Fortune 500 companies, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. Dr. Miller received her master’s degree in information sciences (MIS) and her Ph.D. in instructional design from Virginia Tech. She was recognized at the 75th Anniversary of Women at Virginia Tech as an outstanding woman alumna and was named the 2013 Outstanding Alumni for Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering. She serves as chair of the Virginia 4-H Foundation Board and is a member of the National Bankshares Board of Directors.
John (Jack) Sepple was the Group Technology Officer for Accenture Operations and Senior Managing Director for Accenture Cloud, retiring as of February 2019. Jack’s deep expertise and reputation as a leader and innovator in the technology industry are significant assets, which he offered to both the Group Technology Office and Cloud role. Since 2011, Jack served as the Global Managing Director of Cloud, focused on helping clients plan, implement and manage cloud services, including infrastructure, platform, software and business process-as- a-service for this +$6B component of Accenture. Jack has also established alliances with some of the most influential partners in the Cloud ecosystem including AWS, Microsoft, Google, HP, ServiceNow and VMWare. From 2013-2015, Jack served as the Global Managing Director for Infrastructure Services growing the business by over $800M over three years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the College of William &Mary and a master’s degree in business administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. GRACE is conducting their first medical trial in Chile by working with CETRAM, a Chilean center for movement disorder. The team is preparing a medical publication about the safety and efficacy of their biomedical device for tremor control on patients diagnosed with Essential Tremor. With their prize money, they’ve updated their prototype with new features to improve data acquisition. They’re exploring venture capitalist opportunities in Chile and the U.S. The device is being patented at the European Patent Office, and soon in Hong Kong. $10,000 Information Technology Award in 2018 novapace , Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany Lukas Braisz, Patrick Scholl, Simon Staffa Team novapace (formerly called FeetBack) launched its website in November 2018 at https://novapace.de. In September 2018, they received the EXIST Business Start-Up Grant, a program from the European Union for turning scientific business ideas into business plans. This one-year scholarship provides salary for all team members, professional coaching and financial support for prototype development and testing. The team won second place for its training device for Parkinson’s patients at the 2018 Arrow Electronics Innovators Award, which focuses on hardware startups. This device includes a sensor-based shoe insole in combination with a smartphone application to help patients reintegrate correct walking patterns into their everyday life and receive customized training suggestions. The novapace team plans on conducting laboratory tests with Parkinson's patients in February 2019. Blockflyer recently partnered with the Center for Aviation Competence at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Tech Gym, University of Technology Sydney, Australia, 2018 Finalist: After the VT Global Entrepreneur Challenge, Tech Gym joined a medical device-based accelerator in Australia and received a successful first round of seed money. Sybil Mayard completed the first year of her Master's degree in September 2018. She anticipates
Codable’s website launch in September 2019, just in time for the new academic year. The website will be promoted at career fairs and “Freshers' Fairs around the UK,'' as well. Her team member, Olcay Kilincci, founded “Myeducoach” in February 2019 and is a representative of the University Kent in Turkey. Olcay serves as a liaison to help Turkish universities and foreign universities from the United Kingdom, United States and Canada collaborate, access students, strengthen their institutional ties, and understand the Turkish education market. In 2018, Cohex used some of its initial winnings to hire an assistant to implement key experiments on its prototype, a system designed to maintain the perfect humidity level during fruit exportation, which helps to reduce loss and improve fruit quality. Currently, Cohex is seeking private investment opportunities (while managing full-time jobs) in order to be able to pursue final validation testing on its concept. The team continues to develop the technology, pursue material research and the patent process, both nationally and internationally. $5,000 People’s Choice Winner in 2017 Nexenic , ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland Astrid Besmer, Reto Muhl, Claudio Ruiz Da Silva After the VT Global Entrepreneur Challenge, Team Nexenic entered the "RUNWAY" Startup Incubator of its university, ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences. It added team member, Johannes Hofer, to assist with marketing strategy. With the prize money, Nexenic began working on its second prototype, and in April 2018, it officially incorporated it into its business. Nexenic also developed the steasy®, a smart and portable steamer in the size of a lunchbox that fits in every handbag, does not leak and comes with a rechargeable integrated battery. Tekuma, University of Technology Sydney, Australia, 2017 Finalist: Tekuma, the one-handed controller company, relocated to Adelaide, South Australia. In 2018, the team was a finalist in the China Shenzhen Innovation Entrepreneurship Competition; went to New York with FD Global's Female Founders Program; received third place in the THero Brinc ‘Are You China Ready?’
Guangzhou competition; won the NextGen Logistics category at the University Startup World Cup in Copenhagen; and made its first sales in August 2018. The move to Adelaide was prompted by acceptance into the University of South Australia's Venture Catalyst Space Program, which has allowed Tekuma to pursue the defense and space industries in South Australia. Park & Diamond is dedicated to improving cycling safety; its ultraportable helmets are still available for pre-order on Indiegogo InDemand. As of March 2019, there are 19,500 helmets pre-ordered at nearly $1.7M. Meanwhile, the team is working on manufacturing and shipping its first helmets in late spring 2019 and implementing an official commercial launch in fall 2019. Park & Diamond hired a team of eight engineers, marketers and business operations professionals collectively, all of whom are working full-time in Brooklyn (DUMBO), NY. In April 2017, Park & Diamond took first place and $7,500 at the Union Innovation Challenge at Virginia Tech, as well as the $100,000 grand prize at the EIX E-Fest in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
