President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: August 27, 2018 G ood morning, my name is Dr. Michael Groves, President of Oak Hill Academy. Welcome to our school, located here in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the town with the name of all names, Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. I believe it is important for you to hear from me, the Head of School, what we believe … our values. We believe in community—for here in this place— even though we assemble from all over the word, here we live together—so, value this community, our community, your community. We believe in responsibility, for that is how a person grows into maturity, by taking responsibility for oneself. We believe in transformation, for if you do take responsibility for yourself and live in a community that holds you accountable, you can and will grow into the person you aspire to be. We believe in moral courage. To stand up for what is right, to protect those who may be weaker or less fortunate than you, to value what the world may take for granted … that takes moral courage. This year our theme is “Walk in Your Shoes.” We want you to learn that viewing life from another’s perspective is an invaluable lens to view your own life. Serving others, being compassionate and generous; I believe that a life lived selflessly is a life lived with tremendous character. To walk in another’s shoes is how you transform yourself into the person God intends for you to be. New students and returning students alike, you shall be pushed to new levels of success here on “The Hill.” So, remember, when you are uncomfortable, this indicates you are growing. Be patient. It is a long journey from today until May 18; real growth takes time; healthy relationships take time. Be patient. Know that there are fine folks here at OHA, people with a world of experience, or well-worn shoes if you will: Coach Steve Smith, 35 years, Rhonda Bowen 38 years, yours truly, over 20 years. We have walked this ground before and we shall be here for you.
Will we push you sometimes? Absolutely, expect nothing less. Will we be there for you, absolutely, we expect nothing less from ourselves—or from any person here on staff. This is a special school with many great traditions, none more special than the tolling of the Academy Bell. Seniors, remember this moment, for after today, the bell shall not toll again until May 17, 2019, graduation eve. Let us begin the 140th academic year with tolling of the Academy Bell.

On Monday morning, August 27th, the original school bell chimed as Oak Hill Academy officially began its 140th academic year. With this new beginning comes the anticipation of a successful year by students and faculty alike. This year our diverse group of students comes to us from22 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 15 foreign countries. All have come together to create our unique community on “the hill” where we strive to provide a quality education for all who come our way. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of unpacking, finding room assignments, getting class schedules, and picking up supplies and uniforms a new sense of independence is discovered; new friendships are created; old friendships are rekindled; and another chapter in the history of the school is written. The entire Oak Hill Academy faculty and staff welcomes our students to campus and looks forward to another successful year. th

Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 14-15 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. Saturday morning began with the registration and social time. Everyone then gathered in Fletcher Chapel for a presentation by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. The students, faculty, and staff joined alumni for a brief memorial service to pay tribute to alumni who had passed during the previous year. The tolling of the campus bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. The group then made their way to Noonkester Park for a picnic lunch and afternoon of fun and visiting. Food stations, games, and music highlighted the afternoon festivities. A new addition to the Alumni Weekend schedule was “The Hill on a Midsummer’s Night Fundraising Dinner.” Tickets for the event were $100 per person or a table of six for $500. A delicious buffet dinner and live music were enjoyed on the lawn at the Hough Dormitory Picnic Shelter. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with a continental breakfast in the dining hall and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 13-14, 2019.

$1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to get as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal for 2018-2019 is to have as many alumni as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report.” We challenge all former students to give back to your Alma Mater in this easy and affordable way. Thank you to the following alumni and former students whomade a contribution to OHA between June 1 – September 19, 2018

Gold Team News 2018-2019 Season Outlook Tradition dictates that the Oak Hill Warriors play the most challenging high school basketball schedule in the nation. This year is no different. The Warriors will again meet many other top ranked teams. Coach Smith has never been the type to back away from tough competition. His motto has always been one of – if you want to be the best, then you need to play the best. This season the team will compete in two different events in the state of Florida (City of Palms Classic, December & National Hoopfest, February), as well as the Bojangles Bash in Columbia, SC in early December. Highlighted in the month of January is a nationally televised game on ESPN from the Hall of Fame HoopHall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a trip to California for the Nike Extravaganza. In addition to demanding road competitions, the Warriors will play 20+ home games along with numerous events in our region in Bristol & Lexington, Virginia, Beckley, West Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Oak Hill has been a fixture in high school basketball since winning their first national championship in 1993. This year’s squad will be much featured via social media and live streaming games. And OHA is happy to offer all of our home games streaming live on our new school site at www.OakHillEvents.com. (I don’t think this is a working site.) Join the Warriors this year either at a home or road game, or by watching on line, as they suit up and lay it on the line each and every game in their quest to continue the winning tradition and success of Oak Hill Basketball.
