Lenny’s Sunset By Karen Byerely There are so many things I see when I look out this window. I mean, the trees, the road, the bushes and flowers I have yet marked. But why is a sunset so important to her? I hear her talk about how beautiful it is, but what really makes it special? Is it the brightness? Is it the time of day? Does it mean something heartfelt? Yes, it is bright, and it seems to happen this time every day, but why does she see it the way she does? It is special to her; I know from the change in her tone when she talks to me. I know it is special to her by the way she stares out the window as if she wishes it would never go away. I know it is special to her by the way she sighs as its brightness turns dim. It is familiar to her and you know, it is familiar to me too. It tells me it’s time for my other family members to come home. It tells me it’s time for my second meal of the day. It tells me it’s time to grab a few toys from the toy basket. It tells me it’s time to curl up on the couch with my family after a long day away from home. You know, she is right. The sunset has a special place in our heart. You know, she is right. The sunset is special to her as it is to me too. It is my time with her and her time with me as we wait for another day to pass. I wonder if she knows I see for her. She is blind, I hear her say time and time again. I hope she knows. The sunset is special and heartfelt. I just hope she knows
